Perched high in the mountains, Perperikon is among the most important archaeological sites in the Balkans. Dating back to the 2nd millennium BC, it is believed to have been a significant Thracian religious center. The site features a rock-hewn sanctuary, a royal palace, and fortified walls and towers. It is often linked to the legendary Oracle of Dionysus, which ancient texts compare to the oracle at Delphi.

Constructed in the 1st century AD, Villa Armira is the largest private Roman villa discovered in Bulgaria, likely owned by a wealthy local aristocrat or retired Roman official.
