Excellent brush up of history to help understand where things are today - My guide was knowledgable, clear and objective. She had plenty of additional visual aids to support her views. Looking at what Hungary lived under the communist regime through the sculptures that remain from the 50s and later gives plenty of room for discussing history and politics. The conversation with the guide was pleasant and rich covering the 1920s, the impact of the 2 wars, the "revolution" of 1956 and the soviet regime and then a bit of what went after the dismantling of the USSR

Grisly fascination - You really need a guide to help you appreciate the history and iconography of the statues, and Ildi was great. Lovely informative guide with excellent English who explains all the sculptures and puts them in their historical context, complete with the ironic nicknames the Hungarians gave them as a bit of comic subversion. The sculptures are propaganda and need to be seen as such: as art they are a mixture of the competent and the truly awful, but they are all fascinating in a gruesome sort of way. If you want to understand the ‘56 uprising and how it felt to live under Soviet hegemony this is a good place to start. Take metro line 4 to the end, then bus 101E or 150 and when you get off turn round and look for Stalin’s boots on the skyline.

Memento Park, a history through sculpture - Extremely interesting and informative. Our guide, Louisa, was exceptional. She interpreted the sculptures which would have been lost on us otherwise.

Stimulating guided tour - Judith has helped us interpret all the symbology that totalitarian regimes use to generate adherence, indoctrination, and collective purpose. There is no way out for the individual either you submit or the regimen submits. The result is political, economic and moral dismantling. I am sure that we will come up with conclusions with application to what we are living in Europe now. Very well invested hour and a half. The visit is in English. Judith shows great interest to know the family account that has come to us of the Spanish civil war.

Very addictive - Highly recommended the guided tour, so you can better understand what is in the park, the concept it represents and the idea behind its opening. It's all symbology and hidden secret meanings. Very interesting, the Ildi guide was super competent welcoming and professional, accompanied us enthusiastically and devoted a lot of time.
