De Haar Castle’s origins trace back to the 14th century, initially built as a fortified residence by a servant of the Prince-bishop of Utrecht. The current castle was constructed in the late 19th century when Baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nijevelt inherited the dilapidated estate and married French Baroness Helene de Rothschild. With her vast wealth, they built a new castle adorned with luxurious furnishings and valuable antiques, including an 18th-century Japanese palanquin from the renowned Tokugawa family. Visitors can tour this private museum and its opulent displays year-round, except in September when the family resides there.
