- Grand Place - The beer tour kicks off at the Grand-Place, Brussels’ breathtaking central square, surrounded by Gothic and Renaissance-style buildings that honor the city’s historic merchant and trade guilds. Among these is the Brewers’ House, which Rich will highlight and discuss briefly. (We’ll bypass the brewing museum there and head directly to our first beer café to explore history through a glass of beer!)
- Poechenellekelder - A short 5-minute walk takes us to Poechenellekelder, a fantastic beer café brimming with quirky Brussels charm. Rich will guide the group through a tasting of several essential Belgian beer styles, accompanied by a classic Brussels snack like a Croque Monsieur or a meat, cheese, and bread board. (On days when Poechenellekelder is closed, we’ll visit a special, alternate tavern.)
- La Fleur en Papier Doré - After a 5-minute walk, Rich will welcome you into this cozy haven of beer and civic culture. It has long been a meeting place for artistic, literary, and politically-minded locals (including Rene and Georgette Magritte, a century ago). With Rich’s assistance, you’ll select a beer from La Fleur’s menu of less-commercialized beers that offer a taste of classic Brussels beer flavor.
- La Mort Subite - Rich will lead the group on a 10-minute walk through grand arcades and medieval alleys of Brussels, and will welcome you to his favorite Belle Époque-era beer hall for excellent beer, a delicious dessert, and leisurely people-watching. You’ll choose from a menu of 60 beers (using your newfound beer knowledge, or with Rich’s help), and enjoy a savory snack or finish sweet with Belgian chocolate mousse or tiramisu. Afterward, we’ll walk 10 minutes back to the starting point at the Grand-Place. (On days when A la Mort Subite is closed, we’ll visit a special, alternate tavern.)
