Discovering the Rare Snubfin Dolphins of Roebuck Bay
Embark on a journey through Roebuck Bay with Broome’s leading eco-cruise team. Discover the rare snubfin dolphins and other marine wonders in a sustainable and respectful manner.
Setting Sail on Roebuck Bay
As an advocate for sustainable tourism, I am always on the lookout for eco-friendly travel experiences that allow us to connect with nature while preserving its beauty. When I heard about the Eco Cruise in Broome, I knew it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. The promise of encountering the rare Australian snubfin dolphins, along with other marine life, in the pristine waters of Roebuck Bay was too enticing.
The day began with a complimentary pick-up from my accommodation, a thoughtful touch that minimized the need for additional transportation. Emma, our friendly driver, delivered us to the entrance point where we met our skipper, Cameron Birch. The boarding process was seamless, thanks to the innovative sealegs vessel that drove right up onto the beach, allowing even the elderly passengers to board without getting their feet wet.
Once aboard the spacious catamaran, the Balena, we set off on a leisurely three-hour tour. The vessel was equipped with ample viewing areas and shaded spots, ensuring a comfortable journey for all. As we cruised through the nutrient-rich waters of this Ramsar registered site, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at the natural beauty surrounding us.
A Symphony of Marine Life
Roebuck Bay is a haven for marine creatures, and our tour did not disappoint. Our knowledgeable host shared fascinating insights about the area’s wildlife and its significance to the Yawuru people, the original inhabitants of the region. It was heartening to see such respect for the local culture and environment.
The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly the sighting of the snubfin dolphins. These rare creatures, only named in 2005, are unique to the region and boast the largest permanent population in the world here in Broome. Watching them frolic in the seagrass meadows was a magical experience. Their ability to bend their necks and attract prey by spitting is a testament to the wonders of evolution.
In addition to the snubfin dolphins, we were fortunate to spot bottlenose dolphins, turtles, dugongs, sea snakes, and a variety of seabirds. Each sighting was a reminder of the rich biodiversity that thrives in these waters, thanks to the second-largest tides in the world that flush and enrich the bay daily.
A Journey to Remember
Throughout the tour, we were treated to delicious homemade snacks, adding a personal touch to the experience. The crew’s passion for the environment and their dedication to providing an informative and enjoyable journey was evident in every aspect of the tour.
Our skipper, Cameron, even steered the catamaran with a remote control at times, allowing him to join us at the front and share his knowledge firsthand. Assisted by deckhand Kieran, the crew ensured that everyone had a good vantage point for photos and a comfortable place to sit.
As we returned to shore, I reflected on the morning spent in Roebuck Bay. It was a reminder of the importance of sustainable tourism and the role we all play in preserving our planet’s natural wonders. The Eco Cruise in Broome is more than just a tour; it’s an invitation to connect with nature and appreciate the delicate balance of life in our oceans. I left with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to continue advocating for eco-friendly travel experiences that celebrate and protect our environment.
