Unveiling the Secrets of Barbados Rum at Stade’s Distillery
Drawn by the allure of Barbados rum, I embarked on a journey to Stade’s Rum Distillery in Bridgetown. With a warm welcome and a taste of history, I discovered the secrets of rum-making in a stunning coastal setting.
A Warm Welcome to Stade’s Rum Distillery
As soon as I stepped out of the taxi, I was greeted with a warm Bajan welcome and a refreshing rum punch from Joy-Ann. Arriving 40 minutes early due to lighter traffic, I was pleasantly surprised by the hospitality that awaited me. It was a perfect start to what promised to be an unforgettable experience at Stade’s Rum Distillery, a historic gem in Bridgetown.
The venue itself was pristine and impressive, a testament to the rich legacy of Barbados rum. Founded in 1893 by George Stade, the distillery is a living museum of rum-making history. I was joined by Ramon, our host and a self-confessed ‘rum geek,’ whose enthusiasm and knowledge were infectious. His passion for rum was evident, and it set the tone for the rest of the tour.
Exploring the Secrets of Barbados Rum
The tour was a deep dive into the secrets of Barbados rum, and I could feel the history and craftsmanship in every corner of the distillery. From the historic pot stills in “Pot Still Alley” to the Distiller’s Vault filled with decades of recipes and blueprints, the experience was both educational and exhilarating.
Ramon guided us through the distilling process, explaining how the industry adapted to changes on the island, such as the reduction in sugar refineries. It was fascinating to learn about the award-winning rums produced here, including Planteray Rum and Stade’s Rum. Tasting rum straight from the barrel in the dimly lit cellars was a highlight, offering a raw and authentic flavor that was unlike anything I’d ever experienced.
Savoring the Moment on Brighton Beach
The tour concluded with a custom tasting at the Beach Deck Bar, where the stunning views of Brighton Beach provided the perfect backdrop. Four rum options were available, including Stade’s Bond No. 8 and the award-winning white rum, Stade’s Beach Vat No. 1. Each had its unique character, and the sun-soaked setting made the tasting even more enjoyable.
The staff’s outstanding customer service and attention to detail were evident throughout the experience. Joy-Ann, Ramon, and our pint-sized tour guide Saraih were true rum aficionados, and their passion for their craft was the special ingredient that made the tour truly exceptional.
Stade’s Rum Distillery is a must-visit for anyone in Barbados. The combination of history, craftsmanship, and stunning location on Brighton Beach makes it an unforgettable experience. I left with a newfound appreciation for rum and a desire to return soon. If you’re planning a trip to Bridgetown, make sure to check out Stade’s Rum Distillery for yourself. You won’t be disappointed!
