8 DAYS PANTANAL WILDLIFE TOUR
Pantanal - Day 1: Welcome and commencement of the Pantanal wildlife tour
Upon arrival at the airport or hotel, guests will be greeted and driven 100KM to the city of Pocone. From Pocone, the journey continues for approximately 40km until reaching Pouso Alegre lodge.
Pouso Alegre is renowned for its exceptional birdwatching opportunities, boasting an impressive variety of bird species and daily sightings that are among the highest of any tour.
The lodge’s prime location offers easy access to diverse habitats, including rivers, wetlands, flooded pastures, gallery forests, and dry scrublands.
Species to observe:
The magnificent Hyacinth Macaws, Greater Rhea, Bare-faced Curassow, Chestnut-bellied Guan, up to four ibis species, the formidable Southern Screamer, Jabiru, Maguari Stork, Nacunda Nighthawk, Black-collared Hawk, White Woodpecker, Gray-crested Cacholote, Great Rufous Woodcreeper, Mato Grosso Antbird, White-lored Spinetail, and Red-crested Cardinal.
Day 2: A full day of wildlife observation
Pantanal - A full day is dedicated to exploring the flora and fauna of the Pantanal at the Pouso Alegre private reserve. The day begins with an early morning walk for bird and wildlife viewing.
After returning to the lodge for breakfast, guests will venture into the forest to continue exploring the forest and grasslands, spotting animals and birds such as:
rheas, armadillos, storks, coatis, capybaras, hyacinth macaws, howler monkeys, and numerous other species.
Following lunch, an afternoon drive in an open truck along a private road will explore open lands and grasslands in search of marsh deer, giant anteaters, toco toucans, tapirs, armadillos, hyacinth macaws, and a variety of other wildlife.
From mid-July to mid-October, time can be spent at water holes observing animals coming to drink. After dinner, a night safari with a spotlight will be conducted along the lodge’s private road.
Day 3: Transfer to Hotel Mato Grosso Pantanal and boat excursion
Pantanal - After another morning at Pouso Alegre Lodge, guests will travel a few hours south, further into the Pantanal. The next two nights will be spent at a lodge on the banks of the tranquil Rio Claro River, where afternoon boat trips on the river are a highlight. These boat rides offer a relaxing opportunity to see Agami and Boat-billed Herons, Blue-throated Piping-Guan, Black-collared Hawk, up to five kingfisher species, Giant Otter, and more.
As night falls, Band-tailed Nighthawks emerge to hunt insects over the river, accompanied by large Greater Bulldog Bats. Evening spotlighting for nightjars may reveal Swallow-tailed and Spot-tailed Nightjars, and Pauraque.
Day 4: Full day of wildlife observation by car and boat
Pantanal - A nearby trail winds through gallery forest along the river’s edge, often teeming with birds in the morning. The open nature of the forest makes birdwatching relatively easy, with sightings of Band-tailed Antbird, Large-billed Antwren, and Helmeted Manakin typically not difficult. A Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl imitation can attract large flocks of passerines, such as Flavescent Warbler, Ashy-headed Greenlet, Stripe-necked Tody-Tyrant, and others.
Additional targets may include White-naped Xenopsaris, Pale-crested Woodpecker, or Nanday Parakeet (in some years). In the afternoon, another boat ride on the river is an option.
Day 5: Drive to Porto Jofre and enjoy roadside wildlife
Pantanal - After breakfast, guests will board a vehicle and drive south towards the end of the Pantanal Transpantaneira highway. Several stops will be made along the way to search for the stunning Scarlet-headed Blackbird, elusive Cinereous-breasted Spinetail, vocal Fawn-breasted Wren, elegant Maguari Stork, and more.
The comfortable hotel at the road’s end will be reached by late morning, and after lunch, the afternoon will be spent cruising the rivers in search of Jaguars, as well as birds and other wildlife.
Day 6: Full day boat excursion in search of jaguars
Pantanal - After an early breakfast, guests will embark on a boat between 6:45 - 7:00 AM to begin the search for jaguars.
The lodge is approximately a 35-minute boat ride from the Three Brothers River, the world’s premier location for spotting and photographing jaguars.
The entire day will be spent on the river searching for jaguars (approximately 10-12 hours). While other boats return to the lodge for lunch, guests will enjoy a picnic-style lunch in the prime jaguar area, maximizing their time and enjoying sightings independently.
Return to the lodge is expected around 5:30 – 6:00 PM. Upon arrival, guests can refresh and relax before enjoying a delicious dinner at the restaurant.
Wildlife: In addition to jaguars, there are opportunities to see giant river otters, howler and capuchin monkeys, anacondas, and a variety of bird species. While the primary focus is on jaguars, all beautiful wildlife encounters will be appreciated.
Day 7: Full day boat excursion in search of jaguars
Pantanal - The itinerary is the same as the previous day.
Day 8: Conclusion of the 8-day Pantanal wildlife tour
Pantanal - The Pantanal wildlife tour concludes. After breakfast, guests will check out and begin their journey back to Cuiaba. Arrival in Cuiaba is typically around 12 PM (lunchtime). For those with early flights, earlier transportation to the airport can be arranged.
