- Black Church (Biserica Neagra) - The Black Church is a renowned tourist attraction in Brașov. With a history of over 600 years, this grand Gothic church is a symbol of the city beneath Tampa Mountain. Construction began in 1384 and took nearly a century, concluding in 1477. Initially a Roman Catholic church, it was converted to a Lutheran Evangelical church in the 16th century, hosting Romania’s first service of this denomination in 1542. In April 1689, a massive fire ravaged Brașov, and the church’s walls were blackened by smoke and soot, earning it the name “Black Church.” Reconstruction continued until 1722, supported by the community. The Black Church also boasts a rich collection of oriental carpets, murals, and other unique artworks.
- Piața Sfatului - Piața Sfatului is a lively and historic square in Brașov’s Old Town. Since medieval times, it has been a key commercial hub for the city and region, hosting markets and attracting merchants from afar. Today, it retains much of its medieval charm, thanks to the historic buildings surrounding it. At its center is the Council House (Casa Sfatului), with other notable buildings like Casa Mureșenilor, Casa Filstich-Plecker, Casa Negustorilor (Casa Hirscher), and the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary nearby. The Black Church is also within walking distance, along with the famous Rope Street (Strada Sforii) and other attractions.
- Rope Street - Strada Sforii - Strada Sforii is a fascinating and popular destination in Brașov, known for its narrow and picturesque dimensions. It is one of Europe’s narrowest streets, measuring just over one meter wide and about 80 meters long. Dating back to the 17th century, it was originally a corridor for firefighters. Over time, it has become a well-known tourist spot. Its medieval charm and narrow width make it appealing, offering a unique experience and a perfect photo opportunity. Strada Sforii is just a five-minute walk from Council Square (Piața Sfatului), making it an easy addition to any Brașov itinerary.
- Casa Sfatului - Casa Sfatului is a significant cultural and architectural landmark in Brașov. Its clock tower, approximately 58 meters high, is a striking feature in the center of Council Square (Piața Sfatului). Built in the early 15th century, it served as the city’s local administration seat for centuries. Casa Sfatului showcases a blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architectural styles. Since the mid-1990s, it has housed the Brașov County Museum of History, offering visitors insights into the city’s past.
- Brașov - Catherine’s Gate and Schei Gate were integral parts of Brașov’s old citadel walls. Today, they are important historical monuments and tourist attractions. Catherine’s Gate, built in the early 16th century, was the sole entrance to the citadel from the southwest until the 19th century. As the city expanded, the gate became inadequate for the increasing number of merchants, leading to its demolition and the construction of Schei Gate in the early 19th century. Schei Gate, featuring a triumphal arch design with three openings, still stands today. Only the tower of Catherine’s Gate’s outer gate remains, visible near Schei Gate.
