- Bran Castle (Dracula’s Castle) - Originally built on the site of a Teutonic Knights’ stronghold from 1212, Bran Castle was first mentioned in a document dated November 19, 1377, granting the Saxons of Kronstadt (Brasov) the right to construct the Citadel.
Although Bram Stoker never visited Transylvania, the Irish author used his research and vivid imagination to craft the eerie and formidable domain of Count Dracula, leading to enduring myths that it was once the residence of Vlad Tepes, the ruler of Walachia. While the connection to Dracula is tenuous, the castle remains a significant draw for all enthusiasts of the Count.
- Peles Castle - Commissioned by King Carol I in 1873 and completed in 1883, this castle served as the summer home of the royal family until 1947. Its 160 rooms are embellished with exquisite examples of European art, Murano crystal chandeliers, German stained-glass windows, and Cordoba leather-covered walls.
King Carol spared no expense. Peles Castle was the first European castle to have electricity, even boasting its own power plant. The castle features hot and cold running water, central heating, and a central vacuum system. The stained glass roof of the foyer opens mechanically, and there is a small elevator for the royal family. Each room is decorated in a unique style or theme. There is a Concert Hall, Music Room (India), Turkish Salon, Great Salon (Italy), Council Room (Switzerland), Moor Hall, and much more. The Royal Library has a secret door, and the castle’s 60-seat theater, with a royal box, hosted the first movie screening in Romania in 1906.
