Depart from Bucharest and journey to Sinaia, traveling through the picturesque Prahova Valley. Continue the drive to Bran to explore the renowned medieval castle, famously known as “Dracula’s Castle.” Originally built as a fortress for the citizens of Brasov to protect the city, Prince Vlad used the castle as a headquarters during his campaigns in Transylvania. Today, it serves as a fascinating medieval art museum. Enveloped in mystery and legend, and perched atop a 200-foot-high rock, Bran Castle is famous for its striking towers and turrets, as well as the myth surrounding Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Constructed on the site of a Teutonic Knights stronghold from 1212, the castle was first mentioned in a document by Louis I of Hungary on November 19, 1377, granting the Saxons of Kronstadt (Brasov) the right to build the citadel. Although Stoker never visited Transylvania, the Irish author used research and his vivid imagination to create the dark and foreboding domain of Count Dracula, leading to enduring myths that it was once the home of Vlad Tepes, ruler of Wallachia. Despite the tenuous connection to Dracula, the castle remains a major draw for fans of the Count. After the visit, enjoy some leisure time at the souvenir market.

A short drive will bring you to the city of Brasov. Surrounded by the peaks of the Southern Carpathian Mountains and rich in Gothic, baroque, and renaissance architecture, along with numerous historical attractions, Brasov is one of Romania’s most popular destinations. Founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1211 on an ancient Dacian site and settled by the Saxons as one of the seven walled citadels, Brasov exudes a unique medieval charm and has been featured in many recent period films. The city is steeped in legends of vampires and medieval tales. Enjoy a walking tour through the old town center, including the Black Church, the Council Square, the Hircher House, and baroque-style buildings from the Austro-Hungarian era. During the tour, pass by the Black Church, the largest Gothic cathedral between Vienna and Istanbul.

Begin the return journey to Bucharest in the late afternoon.
