With three fault lines traversing the isles, Shetland’s geology is among the most varied in Europe, earning it the prestigious UNESCO Geopark Status. The journey takes us to the North West mainland of Shetland, where the ancient Lewisian Gneiss rocks, dating back 2.9 billion years, are located. As we travel north, we are treated to breathtaking cliff landscapes and sea stacks sculpted by the mighty Atlantic Ocean. Our destination is Shetland’s volcano, Eshaness, which was active 390 million years ago. After a brief photo opportunity, we head south, enjoying the sight of Shetland’s highest peak, Ronas Hill, with its red granite standing at 450 meters and 450 million years old. We pause at Tangwick Haa Museum, constructed in the late 17th century as the laird’s residence, where visitors can explore exhibits detailing Northmavine’s history and browse local crafts. The return journey south includes a stop in Brae for lunch at Frankie’s Fish and Chip shop before continuing back to Lerwick.
