Explore the historic Old Town of Poole and delve into its rich and fascinating past with a guided tour. Wander through lanes that were once bustling piers, peek behind the facades of the High Street, and discover the intriguing curly Cod.
Commencing at 19 High Street, this guided walking tour will transport you back in time to envision Poole as it was in bygone centuries. Officially ‘established’ in 1248 when Sir William Longspee sold the land to the townspeople to finance his Crusade, from which he never returned, Poole’s history extends much further back to the Iron Age and includes Roman ties. Participants will learn about the reclamation of Poole’s coastline, the Spanish attack in search of the pirate Harry Paye, how Newfoundland Codfish financed one of Poole’s transformations, and the locations of existing smuggling tunnels. The main tour lasts two hours at a leisurely walking pace, primarily on level pavements, and is fully wheelchair accessible. A shorter tour option is available upon request.
