• Granary Burying Ground - Established in 1660, this cemetery is the final resting place of notable figures such as Paul Revere, Sam Adams, John Hancock, and Benjamin Franklin’s parents. It also contains the graves of those killed in the Boston Massacre.
• King’s Chapel - Founded in 1686, King’s Chapel was the first Anglican congregation in the Boston area. While we won’t go inside, you’ll admire its architecture. The chapel offers tours that include visits to the crypts beneath the main room and the bell in the steeple.
• King’s Chapel Burying Ground - Established in 1630, the same year Boston was founded, this burial ground is the resting place of many notable individuals, including John Winthrop, Massachusetts’ first governor who served 12 terms, and Mary Chilton, believed to be the first woman to step off the Mayflower. We’ll also discuss William Dawes, known for his famous ride warning colonists of the British arrival.
• Government Center - During the American Revolution, the British camped at this site and occupied a church where Boston City Hall now stands. This location is rich in history, including the site of Alexander Graham Bell’s laboratory, where he invented the telephone.
• Boston Massacre Site - The Boston Massacre is considered a pivotal event that escalated tensions between the colonists and the British monarchy. Five colonists were killed and six were injured when British soldiers fired into the crowd. You’ll stand at the exact spot where it happened and learn how it contributed to the American Revolution.
• Faneuil Hall Marketplace - Owned by Peter Faneuil, this building served as a public meeting place where colonists discussed revolution and other matters. You’ll hear about the Battle of Bunker Hill, one of the war’s bloodiest battles, as well as Evacuation Day in 1776 and Boston’s role in the War of 1812.
• Boston Common - The walking tour begins here. You’ll learn about William Blackstone, the first European settler who sold the land to John Winthrop in 1630. Stories of witches and other criminals hanged here, as well as the British encampment during the occupation of Boston, will be shared.
• Court Square - In Court Square, you’ll see the former location of the Boston Gaol (jail) from the 1600s. Prisoners included Quakers, “witches,” pirates, murderers, rebels, debtors, and newspaper editors. Notable prisoners included Captain Kidd and individuals from the 1692 Salem Witchcraft Trials.
