Each July, whales make their way back to the Sydney coastline. For millennia, the Aboriginal peoples of this land have celebrated their arrival with songs, stories, and sacred traditions.
The Burri Burri Whale Tour offers a 2-hour walking experience on Bidjigal Country, starting at the beachside entrance of Bondi Pavilion. The guide, Eric Brown, is a Traditional Custodian and esteemed member of the Aboriginal community.
The tour begins at Bondi Pavilion, where the group walks to the engraving site at Bondi Golf Diggers, a clifftop spot overlooking the Pacific Ocean that has been a site of cultural practice for generations. Eric commences with a traditional smoking welcome and then shares the tales of Burri Burri through song, dance, and oral storytelling.
Afterward, with binoculars in hand, the group proceeds to the cliff’s edge to observe whales swimming in the waters below. This experience beautifully combines ancient ceremonies with the wonders of living nature.
