Exploring Malta’s Three Cities: A Family Adventure with Rolling Geeks
Eager to explore Malta’s cultural richness in a unique way, I embarked on a self-drive electric car tour through the Three Cities. Join me as I share the highlights of this engaging and educational journey.
A Unique Journey Through Malta’s Three Cities
As a family that thrives on exploring Europe’s historical and cultural landmarks, we were thrilled to embark on the Rolling Geeks Tour in Malta. This self-drive electric car tour promised a unique way to discover the quaint Three Cities, Kalkara, and Smart City. The idea of a talking car guiding us through these historical streets was intriguing, and it certainly did not disappoint.
The tour began with a brief introduction to our electric vehicle, which resembled a golf cart equipped with a GPS and an electronic guide. My wife and I took turns driving, which was a delightful experience, especially since we were navigating on the opposite side of the road compared to what we’re used to in the U.S. The car’s guide provided fascinating insights into the sites we passed, making the journey both educational and entertaining for our children.
Discovering Malta’s Rich History
Our first stop was the Malta at War Museum, a site that resonated deeply with my passion for history and interactive exhibits. The museum offered a glimpse into Malta’s role during World War II, and the kids were captivated by the stories of resilience and bravery. The Rolling Geeks tour allowed us to pause and explore at our own pace, which was perfect for our family.
As we continued our journey, the car’s guide narrated the history of Fort St. Angelo and Fort Rinella, two of the most impressive forts in the Mediterranean. The kids were particularly fascinated by Fort Rinella’s massive cannon, touted as the largest in the world. The ability to stop and explore these sites added a layer of depth to our adventure, making it more than just a drive-by experience.
A Seamless Blend of Fun and Education
One of the highlights of the tour was the flexibility it offered. We had 2.5 hours to complete the 18km route, but the actual driving took about 1.5 to 2 hours, allowing us ample time to explore. The staff was incredibly accommodating, and even when we encountered a minor hiccup with the GPS, they were quick to assist us and get us back on track.
The tour concluded in the beautiful medieval village of Birgu (Vittoriosa), where we took a leisurely stroll through its charming streets. The kids enjoyed taking selfies with the car’s built-in camera, a feature that added a fun twist to our journey. Overall, the Rolling Geeks tour was a fantastic way to experience Malta’s cultural richness, and I would highly recommend it to families with older children. It was a perfect blend of education and entertainment, leaving us with memories that will last a lifetime.
