Setting Sail into the Night

As someone who has spent countless hours riding the waves and exploring the ocean’s depths, the allure of a night snorkel with manta rays was irresistible. The Big Island’s reputation for offering one of the few places on Earth where you can experience these majestic creatures in their natural habitat at night had me packing my bags and heading to Hawaii. Finding the white van without clear logos was a bit tricky, and there was a moment of panic when Devon, the organizer, couldn’t locate my reservation. But, as with any good surf session, patience and a laid-back attitude prevailed, and soon enough, I was ready to embark on this underwater adventure.

The boat ride to the snorkel site was a quick four-minute journey, a refreshing change from the longer trips I’ve experienced elsewhere. As we arrived, the crew, led by the charismatic Captain Shaka and the knowledgeable Sergei, prepared us for the encounter. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and Sergei’s fun facts about the manta rays added an educational twist to the evening.

Floating on the surface, holding onto the custom light board, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. The blue dive lights illuminated the water below, attracting plankton and, in turn, the graceful manta rays. It was a surreal experience watching these gentle giants glide inches beneath me, their wings spanning wide as they danced in the light. The proximity of the mantas was thrilling, and I couldn’t help but feel a deep connection to the ocean, reminiscent of the bond I share with the waves when surfing.

Despite the initial hiccups, the experience was nothing short of magical. The tour was brief, but the memories of the manta rays’ elegance and the crew’s camaraderie will linger long after.
