- Onizuka Center for International Astronomy Astronomer’s Mid-Level Facility - Maunakea holds a significant place in the cultural heritage of Hawai’i.
As the home of the goddess Poli’ahu, it is also linked to the Hawaiian deities Lilinoe and Waiau. The summit was once considered the domain of the gods and was kapu (forbidden) to all except the highest chiefs and priests. Occasionally, Hawaiian ali’i (royalty) would undertake the long journey to the summit, with Queen Emma being the last royal visitor in 1881, leading her companions on a challenging 6-hour trek to view the summit and rejuvenate in the sacred Lake Waiau.

Today, Maunakea hosts 13 international observatories and welcomes thousands of visitors annually, yet it remains a sacred site for the people of Hawai’i. On the fourth Saturday of every month, MKVIS invites community speakers to discuss Mauna O Wakea from a cultural perspective.
