Best thing our family did! - This was the most amazing thing we did on the Big Island!! I was nervous and don’t like swimming at night but I loved it. They shine lights to attract the plankton and you just float and hold onto a raft and they come to you. Literally they come within inches of you. The manta rays have no defenses or way to hurt you. They just eat the plankton. Super safe. Super fun.

Amazing experience with the coolest creatures in the sea - This is the best guided tour possible. My wife and I had the best time. The crew was fantastic, funny and super prepared and professional. Nice equipment. Would reccomend renting the go pro, worth 40$ all day long. Kaden, Aiden and Gary did an awesome job, would do this again! Kudos and Mahalo

Truly a memorable experience - Cannot express enough how amazing this experience was. The whole process of checking in and getting our equipment and boarding the boat was effortless. I was especially impressed with how the staff handled easing us into the water, and assisting those who needed help or didn’t want to get in (I get it, it’s dark, in the ocean, etc.) - they were gentle and understanding with everyone and ensured everyone was enjoying the experience. Once in the water, the experience itself was something we will be taking about forever, like bucket list type of experience. It’s hard to describe how breathtaking it is to be in the water and have these gentle giants swim and do their feeding flips right in front of you…like mere inches from your face. Worth. Every. Penny. Again, highly recommend this experience to everyone.

Big Island must do for all!! - ★★★★★ – Incredible Night Manta Ray Experience Our night swim with the manta rays was an absolutely unforgettable experience. The excursion was extremely well executed from start to finish. The guides were informative, funny, and clearly passionate about what they do. We were a little hesitant about taking our six-year-old with us, but decided to give it a try—and everything went perfectly. The guides were attentive to everyone’s safety and provided help whenever needed, which made us feel completely at ease. They provided a wetsuit top to keep us warm and a pool noodle for floatation assistance, which worked great for the adults. However, they did not provide any flotation devices for our six-year-old, so we recommend bringing your own floatation option for younger children if you want that extra support. The manta rays swam incredibly close to us, gliding right beneath our group, and there were several different mantas at the site at the same time. To top it off, we even saw a small Galapagos shark passing through, which made the moment even more surreal. It was worth every minute and every penny. Highly recommend this experience for families and anyone looking for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Once in a lifetime experience - Wow! Breathtaking experience. I was worried that it was exploitative to the wildlife but it didn’t seem to be once we got out there. You don’t swim around & you don’t use flippers- everyone hold onto a raft with lights on the bottom, which attracts the fish and manta rays. You have a pool noodle under your legs to help you float. We saw several rays up very close. There were people of all ages, you just need to be able to swim out to the raft. Kids seemed to really love it. The boat ride back in the moonlight was beautiful too.

Amazing Manta Ray Adventure - Really an amazing adventure. Jacob, Noah, and the third musketeer did a wonderful job. The mantas brushed right up against us. There were 20 or so of them, just beautiful. Might ask ask other guests to be calm, giggling screaming teenagers takes away from the enjoyment of other guests. The address provided sent us to the convenience store (not the location of the excursion), and u should provide a phone number we can call you with the reservation, if we need to get additional directions.

Conquering the Deep: A Manta Ray Night Snorkel Review (And a Fear Factor Triumph) - Just back from an absolutely electrifying manta ray night snorkel, and I'm still buzzing! Let me be honest, the idea of jumping into the pitch-black Pacific at 8:30 PM was enough to send shivers down my spine. Trying to juggle a light board, keep my noodle positioned, and not lose my phone (which, let's face it, I quickly abandoned) while battling my nerves was a hilarious, chaotic mess. But, oh my goodness, was it worth it. I was terrified. Legitimately. But the sheer wonder of seeing these magnificent creatures glide through the water, performing their ballet of feeding, completely erased any lingering fear. They are truly breathtaking – graceful, powerful, and utterly mesmerizing. It felt like a once-in-a-lifetime experience, a true privilege to witness. The manta rays were so close, their giant wings brushed against me once too! It was an otherworldly experience, a glimpse into a hidden world. The way they moved, the way they interacted with the light, it was pure magic. And a huge shoutout to Hang Loose crew including Avery and Corey💕Having them right there, ensuring I was safe and comfortable, made all the difference. Knowing I had someone experienced and supportive by my side allowed me to truly relax and enjoy the moment. They were a calming presence in the midst of my initial panic, and I'm so grateful. The company also had a warm shower when we got back in the boat. If you're considering a manta ray night snorkel, DO IT! Even if you're nervous, even if you're a little scared of the dark, push yourself. The reward is immeasurable. It's an experience that will stay with you long after you've dried off and returned to shore. Pros: * Absolutely incredible manta ray encounters. * A truly unique and unforgettable experience. * The sheer beauty and grace of the mantas is awe-inspiring. * Excellent support from experienced guides Cons: * The initial jump into the dark ocean can be daunting. * Juggling equipment while managing nerves can be a bit tricky. Overall: A must-do experience! Overcome your fears and witness the magic of the manta rays at night. You won't regret it.

They don’t tell you this… - If you’re looking for a peaceful, relaxing interaction with sealife, you might want to look elsewhere. First, the positives. The boat is large, fairly new and comfortable. The 20 min boat ride at night alongside the Kona coast is actually quite spectacular. That is something that few tourists probably get to experience, and if the weather is nice with warm tradewinds, you will likely enjoy it a lot unless you easily get seasick. That wasn’t the case on our boat as the seas were pretty calm the night we went. Secondly, the crew is nice and welcoming, and pretty thorough in their explanation of the rules and safety procedures, even if maybe a little unserious and too lighthearted at times but hey it’s Hawaii and people want to have a good time. What they don’t tell you at booking is this. When they lay out these floating pontoons for you to grab onto and have the manta rays approach, they encourage everyone to scream at the top of their lungs in the water as this supposedly entices the manta rays to come closer to the pontoons. So I’m floating there and three young people directly to my right are literally screaming at the top of their lungs the entire time (about 25-30 mins) while I’m trying to enjoy this experience. I lasted for about 20 minutes and then had to bail off because it was just too much. Worst of all, the crew encourages it by continually reminding everybody while in the water to scream and yell underwater so the manta rays will come closer. if you don’t think noise travels underwater I’ve got news for you. Not exactly the tranquil marine life encounter I was expecting. And this appears nowhere in the description. I guess this is a thing, because other boats moored nearby also had their participants doing the same thing. I felt bad for the people at a nearby hotel onshore, which was probably less than 100 yards away from all our boats because they surely had to be hearing this stuff all night long. Anyway, you’ve been warned. The Manta rays do come really close and it’s a very cool experience, but be prepared for a noisy encounter! And it ain’t the manta rays…

Motion sickness - The experience had potential but ultimately felt unsafe. The swell was so strong that the boat was spinning and rocking back and forth at 45-degree angles. Many people were visibly unhappy and sick, with some even vomiting over the side of the boat. Getting on and off the boat was extremely challenging due to the intense rocking. There were also concerns about safety, as kids didn’t have life vests and had to jump into open water in complete darkness. The tour company should warn participants about the likelihood of intense motion sickness beforehand. Additionally, the tour was run by three teenagers, who did their best but were clearly overwhelmed by the responsibility of managing 47 guests - many feeling ill and unhappy.
