Just say “No” Rainbow Helicopter in Kona. - First. I’ve done six other helicopter tours in both Hawaii and Alaska. Rainbow Helicopter tours is a total bait and switch. Their website shows photos of Airbus comfortable helicopter’s similar to ones we had experienced before with other tours. In actuality they use Robinson 44’s. There is no comparison between the two types of helicopters for comfort or stability. The Robinson is like something used for crop dusting. Rickety, uncomfortable seat, no heat or air conditioning. They put your phone in a case around your neck with a lanyard and everything else is taken from you so it doesn’t get sucked out the craft into the rear rotor. Can’t take a hat or anything in your pockets. Things that should make you reconsider. Buckboard seating option the whole way and the “machine” is so small that views are obstructed by the ancillary presence of the pilot. Yes, you can say you were in a helicopter if that’s the instagram thing you want. Other than that it was underwhelming. We purchased volcano tour out of Kona. The pilot never even made an effort to fly in that direction. Instead, he blamed a few clouds. I will not pretend to be qualified to make those types of safety decisions. However, if weather was a factor then I believe the FAA provides recommendations for safety that should be knowable prior to leaving the ground. Later that day I was still upset at being duped but wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt as nobody likes feeling like a stooge. I did finally locate on their website that the disclose using Robinson 44 helicopters. I wish I had found that before booking. Trust them at your own risk.

Fly out of Hilo to see Volcanos!!!!!!! - We were lied to plain and simple, Paid 2,200 for two tickets to see the live volcano on the big island. Guy on phone described the tour, was perfect and what we were looking for in a copter tour. The young lady in reception office was bright and cheery explaining everything to us, adding the weather is cooperating and we should be able to go to the volcano. Great! As soon as we go inside the helicopter, the pilot changed the mood. We may not be able to go over to the volcano because of the weather, but once up there we will check it out. Here is the problem. This tour is out of the Kona Airport. Once in the air, the pilot headed on a straight Northwest course. I kept waiting for him to turn right and head to the volcano, never did. Then he finally says yeah look at the weather over there, its too dangerous to try. The weather has been the same for the last 4 days. He had no intention at any time of flying us to the volcano. Look at other reviews from Kona. They say they fly there but none do. IF YOU WANT TO SEE THE ACTIVE VOLCANO YOU MUST FLY OUT HILO. You are wasting your time in Kona. This was bait and switch and we are extremely unhappy. We could have booked this tour for 400 dollars with a different outfit. Got back to the office and the young lady hid in the office. Neither her or the pilot asked us about how we liked the tour on return. Very strange and now we know why.
