Catching Waves and Aloha Vibes on the Big Island
When the waves of the Big Island call, you answer. Join me as I recount a sun-soaked morning of surfing on Hilo’s eastside, where flexibility and expert instruction turned a family surf lesson into an unforgettable adventure.
Aloha Vibes and Perfect Waves
The Big Island of Hawaii has always been a place that calls to me, with its lush landscapes and the promise of perfect waves. This time, I found myself on the eastside of the island, ready to dive into a surf lesson that promised to be as exhilarating as it was educational. The morning sun was just beginning to warm the sands of 74 Kamehameha Ave, where our adventure was set to begin.
Our instructor, Brandon, greeted us with a laid-back smile and a genuine enthusiasm that was infectious. He took the time to assess the initial surf conditions, and when they weren’t quite right, he didn’t hesitate to move us to a nearby beach with better waves. This kind of flexibility is something I always appreciate, as it shows a deep understanding of the ocean’s ever-changing nature.
Riding the Waves
After a quick land lesson where we practiced our pop-ups and discussed safety, it was time to hit the water. The anticipation was electric, and I could feel the familiar thrill of the ocean calling. Brandon’s instructions were clear and concise, making it easy for everyone in our group to understand the basics of surfing.
As we paddled out, the water was a perfect blend of cool and refreshing, a welcome contrast to the warm Hawaiian sun. Brandon was right there with us, offering tips and encouragement as we caught our first waves. The feeling of standing up and riding a wave is something that never gets old, no matter how many times I’ve done it. It’s a moment of pure freedom and connection with the ocean, and I was thrilled to see everyone in our group experience it too.
A Morning of Success
The morning flew by in a blur of laughter and liquid aloha. Each member of our group managed to stand up and ride several waves, a testament to Brandon’s excellent instruction and the supportive environment he created. It was a safe, fun, and successful session that left us all with a sense of accomplishment and a deeper love for the ocean.
Reflecting on the experience, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share the joy of surfing with others. It’s moments like these that remind me why I fell in love with the ocean in the first place. If you find yourself on the Big Island, I highly recommend checking out this surf lesson for a memorable and rewarding adventure. Whether you’re a seasoned surfer or a complete beginner, the waves of Hilo’s eastside have something special to offer.
