- Nuwakot Durbar - Upon meeting at the departure point or your hotel in Kathmandu, embark on a drive to Nuwakot, which offers stunning views of the northern Himalayan ranges, including the Manaslu to Langtang Range. The journey to Nuwakot takes approximately 2.5 hours. Historically, it was a major trade route to Tibet and one of Nepal’s most prosperous commercial hubs, known as the Western gateway to the Kathmandu Valley. The Seven Story Palace in Nuwakot is a major attraction for visitors. Originally built in 1762 AD and named “DurgaRatna,” it became known as the Seven Story Palace after two stories were lost in the 1934 earthquake. Strategically located and impressively constructed, this palace holds significant historical importance and is still considered an architectural model. With 5-foot-thick walls and towering seven stories above the streets, the palace was designed to withstand formidable forces. A testament to its historical significance is that King Rana Bahadur Shah welcomed the British representative, Mr. William Kirkpatrick, here in 1793, shortly after the Nepal-China war. Additionally, in 1816 AD, King Gribanyoddha received a letter of credential from Mr. E. Gardner, the first UK representative to visit Nepal. The massive 2015 earthquake severely damaged the palace square, prompting local campaigns to restore its historic and cultural significance. Other attractions include Rangamahal (The Palace of Malla King) and Bhairabi Temple. Located just east of the Seven Story Palace, Rangamahal is constructed with beautiful oily bricks and intricate wooden carvings. Since Nuwakot was jointly ruled by the Malla kings of the Kathmandu Valley, Rangamahal served as a recreational spot for the three kings. The four-story palace, known as Garadghar, faces the Seven Story Palace and is believed to have been built by King Prithvi Narayan Shah in 1762 as a Tilingaghar (Store of weapons). Featuring a unique Nepalese Pagoda-style architecture, it stands majestically in the town and remains a central attraction for visitors.
Visitors can spend ample time in Nuwakot and have the opportunity to enjoy a village walk to Malika Hill at 1450 meters, offering expansive views of the land terraces and distant mountains. The return to Kathmandu includes a traditional Nepali lunch at the renowned Parvati’s Homestay.
