Fantastic introduction to Istanbul’s food scene! - Our tour with Esen was super fun, informative and such a great introduction to the local food scene! We went with our three adult children, and the tour exceeded all of our expectations. Great food, at several different kinds of restaurants, but also good background information on the culture & history of the area.

Great - I loved the tour. Food was so good, as well as the guides knowledge. My guides name was Basak, she was very knowledgable and fun to be around. I loved it all, the foods, the walking through the streets part and the alcohol.

WONDERFUL ISTANBUL IT'S FOOD AND PEOPLE - WOW! That is the first thought that comes to mind when I think of this amazing experience. Basak, the tour leader was exceptional! Her extreme kindness, attention to detail, expert information not only about the food we would experience but the history of Istanbul and the cultural significance of the food we sampled was 5+ stars. Simple the best food tour I have experienced. I really liked that the tour was truly focused on local, in most cases family and/or woman owned business. All of the owners we met were so nice and hospitable. I loved that Basak conducted the tour at such a leisurely pace where we never felt rushed but kept t o the scheduled timeline. Her vibrant personality and sense of humor made the experience of pure joy! She is such an asset to this company. Then there is the food, once again WOW! Beginning with Mezzes and the introduction to the Mezze cultural was delicious. Everything was so wonderful it is hard to pick a favorite but a few that deserve special mention are the family bakery where we saw the wood fire oven I am sure has been around for 100 years or more. The rice and bean restaurant. The rooftop bar that offered one of the most spectacular views of Istanbul and wonderful fare. Istanbul stole my heart in a way I never anticipated and I hope to return some day. Thank you so much Basak and Culinary backstreets for providing such a uplifting, pleasant and absolutely DELICIOUS insight to an AMAZING city. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Perfect start to our holiday in Istanbul - We did this tour at the start of our holiday in Istanbul and we are so glad we did! Başak created such a fun and welcoming atmosphere from the beginning which made the whole experience feel engaging. The range of stops were fantastic and the quality of food was exceptional throughout, and we got to try places we would never have found by ourselves. It was also great way to set up the rest of the trip, as Başak's recommendations kept us going for the rest of the week. We also learnt so much about about Istanbul along the way, icluding some great music recommendations which added a nice personal touch. After this food tour, we will definitely be considering another food tour with Culinary Backstreets for our next holiday!

Great tour also for veggies! - We had an absolutely amazing time! Our guide, Basak, was so kind and showed us some truly hidden gems that we probably never would have found on our own. The atmosphere was fantastic the whole time. From watching the sunset at a rooftop bar to enjoying pickled vegetables and beans with rice—it had everything! We’re so glad we took this tour. Highly recommended for vegetarians as well.

Great evening with Duygu strolling through the streets of Beyoglu - We had an awesome evening with Duygu. The tour is just incredible as she takes you to places where you would have never thought of going to. We tasted fried dumplings, pickles, almond cookies, seafood and gorgeous kebab. We had wine on a rooftop, raki in a cellar, and then even tasted lamb tripes on the street. That was quite something!

A beginners guide to food in Istanbul, and so much more. - We had a wonderful evening with Duygu. Just my husband and I, and we certainly picked her brains - not just about the amazing food in Beyoglu, but also the history of Istanbul, Turkish art and literature, and life in Turkyie today. But it's a food tour, so ... a great introduction to different types of food and restaurants - bakeries, dumplings, pickles, kebabs, mezze and desserts (so much food), as well as a wonderful rooftop bar with views in every direction. When we booked it seemed like an expensive treat, but it was worth every penny. Thank you again Duygu.

A great experience, particularly for a one-night stay - I very much enjoyed this tour last night with a small group (me solo plus two other guests). Başak was a fantastic guide and host. Unfortunately I had less than 24 total hours in Istanbul and—while I don’t usually do guided tours—I wanted to maximize the chance of eating lots of great stuff. The experience felt thoughtfully curated (in terms of route, venues, dishes), but also very flexible and responsive… what did we like best? Let’s get more of that or something else that makes a good complement or comparison. What questions did we have (about the food, but also about life in Türkiye, the city and country’s history, etc. etc.)? Led to a fun and informative discussion. The whole thing felt a bit like being out with a friend’s friend who happens to know and love their city well. We made nine (!) stops. Sweets, savories, meats, veg, drinks, pastry. A lovely view from a rooftop terrace bar and proximity to plenty of lively street life. Obviously given the neighborhood there are some tourists around, but the places we stopped felt locally-oriented and not where I’d ever have discovered or chosen on my own. Like I said, I don’t often do tours. I don’t often write reviews. I’ve already recommended this tour to a friend today and if I can get back through Istanbul I’ll do another Culinary Backstreets tour in a different neighborhood (and would be very happy if it was also one of Başak’s, though she assures me her colleagues are great too).
