Betws-y-Coed, the first artists’ colony in Britain, is beautifully situated at the entrance of Snowdonia National Park. This self-guided walking tour invites you to wander through the village’s delightful streets, riverside trails, and historic bridges, discovering how this woodland haven inspired countless landscape artists.
The tour begins at the historic Betws-y-Coed Railway Station. As you explore this scenic village—whose name translates to “prayer house in the woods”—you’ll learn how artist David Cox founded Britain’s first art colony here in 1844, significantly impacting the Welsh village’s future. During the Napoleonic Wars, other landscape artists, unable to travel to Europe, were drawn to its striking beauty. With the advent of railways bringing Victorian tourists, this once-tranquil artist retreat transformed into the gateway to Snowdonia that is known today.
