  Yala National Park spans a vast area on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, from Okanda to Hambantota. The area’s history dates back several centuries, with records indicating it was abandoned three centuries ago due to ‘unhealthy conditions,’ as noted by 16th-century Spanish cartographer Cipriano Sanchez. This may have been due to the swamps and dangerous wildlife that caused various diseases untreatable at the time.
