Exploring the Biscay Coast: A Family Adventure
Eager to explore the beautiful Biscay Coast with my kids, I booked a private tour that promised both adventure and education. Join me as I recount our journey through stunning landscapes and rich history.
Discovering the Biscay Coast with Kids
Our adventure began with a warm welcome from our guide, Jose, who picked us up right from our accommodation. As a single mom traveling with three energetic kids, I was immediately relieved by the private nature of the tour. It meant we could explore at our own pace, without the pressure of keeping up with a larger group. Jose’s friendly demeanor and deep knowledge of the area set the tone for a day filled with discovery and learning.
Our first stop was the breathtaking San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. Known for its stunning views and historical significance, this little island connected by a stone bridge was a sight to behold. While the climb to the church at the top is quite challenging, Jose was incredibly accommodating. He offered alternative viewpoints for those who might find the 241 steps daunting. My kids, full of energy, were eager to take on the challenge, and I was grateful for Jose’s patience and encouragement. The view from the top was indeed worth every step, and it was a perfect opportunity to teach my children about the importance of perseverance and the rewards it can bring.
A Taste of Bermeo and Mundaka
After our invigorating climb, we headed to Bermeo, a vibrant seafaring town rich in history. Jose guided us through the old town, sharing fascinating stories that brought the past to life. We stopped for lunch at a local restaurant, where the kids were thrilled to try some traditional Basque dishes. The restaurant was bustling with locals, and the food was both delicious and reasonably priced. It was a wonderful way to introduce my children to new flavors and cultures.
Our next destination was Mundaka, a small town famous among surfers for its perfect left wave. By this point, the kids were starting to tire, so Jose suggested we take a break and enjoy the stunning coastal views. Sitting together, watching the waves crash against the shore, was a serene moment that allowed us to recharge and appreciate the natural beauty around us. It was a reminder of the simple joys of travel and the importance of taking time to relax and enjoy the moment.
Learning and Reflection in Gernika
Our final stop was Gernika, a town steeped in history and significance for the Basque people. Here, we visited the “Board House” and learned about the famous Gernika tree. Jose’s passion for the area’s history was infectious, and he answered all of our questions with enthusiasm. My children were particularly fascinated by the story of Picasso’s “Guernica” and its connection to the town. It was a powerful lesson in history and art, and it sparked a lively discussion among us.
As we made our way back to our accommodation, I reflected on the day’s experiences. The Biscay Coast Tour was not only a chance to explore a beautiful and relatively unspoiled region but also an opportunity for my family to learn and grow together. Jose’s flexibility and knowledge made the tour accessible and enjoyable for all of us, and I left with a deeper appreciation for the Basque Country and its rich cultural heritage. I highly recommend this tour to any family looking for a unique and enriching travel experience.
