Highlights
  • Memorial of the Berlin Wall - One of the most incredible sites related to the Berlin and the scene of tragic loss and incredible escapes. The memorial itself is over 1km long and includes the only preserved complete cross-section of the Berlin Wall and Death-Strip.
  • Checkpoint Charlie - The most famous of all the Check Points it was the scene of many failed and successful escapes and also an incredible face-off between the American and Soviet forces in the Autumn of 1961.
  • Topography of Terror - The section on Niederkirchnerstrasse is the only surviving fragment of the wall in this part of Berlin. It is right next to the former-Luftwaffe Headquarters which was used during the East German Period as the House of Ministries. It is also the site of one of the more incredible escapes into West Berlin.
  • GDR Watch Tower - Visit and possibly ascend the last of the BT - variant watchtowers that used to surround West Berlin. A rare survival saved thanks to a private initiative.
  • Potsdamer Platz - See how what was just a desolate piece of land in, and also bounding, the death-strip has developed into a high-rise business and entertainment quarter. The rebirth of re-unified Berlin before your very eyes.

Additional Information

Embark on a private exploration of significant locations tied to the Berlin Wall and the Cold War in the company of Birchy or one of our knowledgeable guides. You’ll delve into the Berlin Wall’s chronology, details, and reasons as you traverse the remarkable Berlin Wall Memorial, which retains portions of the death-strip conserved and partly rebuilt. The memorial, unique even before the remembrance initiatives following the Wall’s fall, is marked by astonishing escapes and heartbreaking fatalities.

From the Wall Memorial, our journey continues to a sector of Mitte enclosed by the Berlin Wall, bordering the American sector from the south and the British sector from the west. Here, we’ll behold Check Point Charlie (the most famous crossing between West and East), the vast former House of Ministries buildings (among the scarce surviving Nazi ministry structures), and then head to the last remaining BT-variant Watchtower, which we can actually climb up.

The tour concludes at Potsdamer Platz. Once one of Europe’s most crowded urban junctions, the area was laid to waste at the close of World War II, with remaining structures further obliterated by the erection of the Wall and the creation of the death-strip. Today, as a flourishing business and entertainment hub, it represents a striking testament to a city’s ability to recover from devastating societal calamity.

Great Tour! - We took the Private Behind the Berlin Wall and Cold War Berlin Tour with Paul and it was fantastic!!! We saw and learned so much of Berlin’s history! He was very knowledgeable! Paul was flexible with the schedule and the sites to visit. We had taken a different tour the day before and it included a monument scheduled on this tour, so he gave us the option of skipping it or going to it again. He was very considerate of my elderly parents and their speed of walking. We never felt rushed. He made sure to point out steps to ensure their safety. He was so friendly and fun to get to know. He made sure we had a rest at a cafe he recommended that is popular in Berlin. They had delicious coffee and pastries! Overall, it was a wonderful experience and I would highly recommend this tour and Paul as a guide!

Berlin Wall and Cold War Tour is an absolute must see! - This tour was absolutely amazing! Paul did an excellent job educating our group on the facts from the Cold War, the Berlin Wall, the City as a whole, and answering all other miscellaneous questions that we had for him. Paul was very timely, met us with a smile in an easy location to find, and provided plenty of tour options along the way! The inclement weather did not hamper his spirits, as he remained extremely professional throughout the tour. We were all absolutely astonished of his ability to recall facts from history, even when we threw him a few curve balls along the way! Our small group of 5 people agreed that the tour far exceeded our expectations and was well worth the money we spent!

Excellent Tour - Paul was fantastic, he spent the time to go into detail about the Berlin Wall and the Cold War and answered any of our questions. Would recommend anyone do this tour if you want to learn from an expert guide. It was worth paying extra for a private Tour.

Excellent tour - Great tour with the fantastic Aaron - lovely guy, down to earth, easy to chat to, good level of knowledge and lots of good accompanying material to share. Went with my 15-year-old son who is studying the Cold War at school, and we both learned a lot. Would highly recommend.

Amazing tour - Steve is exceptionally knowledgeable in the topic and he has a fantastic sense of humor. It did not feel like an official tour and more like a friendly promenade with a friend who happens to be a comedian and a professor of history rolled into one. He adapted the tour to our interests.Highly recommend !

Wonderful tour with Beth - Beth was a wonderful guide for this walking tour in English. The tour was primarily supposed to be a cold war tour, but since I was also interested in German and Nazi history, Beth gave me a nice introduction to the history of Germany, rise of the Nazi party, WWII and then the division of Germany and Berlin after the war. Beth is a student of history and very knowledgeable and she was happy to tailor the tour according to my specific needs and answer all my questions. We started at Reichstag, visited the Roma and Cinti memorial, Soviet memorial of WW II and made several other stops related to WWII and the Cold War including a stop at Check point Charlie. At the end of the tour, she recommended me to visit Tranenpalast and some other free museums. This was an expensive tour since I was required to pay the price for two even though I was the only one person in the tour. But I am glad that I still took it. A tour like this needs a guide who is knowledgeable and has good command over the language. Beth was fully equipped. I recommend this tour and Beth as a guide. Just be prepared to walk though since you will need to walk for 3- 4 hours to see all these wonderful historical sites!
