- Bergen - The tour begins in Bergen, known as the Gateway to the Fjords. Established in 1070, this city is rich in historical and cultural landmarks, which we will encounter both on our departure and return.
- Osteroy Municipality - Sørfjorden, or the South fjord, is part of the Osterfjord, a unique natural feature: a saltwater inlet encircling Northern Europe’s largest inland island, Osterøy Island, surrounded by mainland. We travel along the South fjord to the crossroads at Trengereid. (We typically do not stop here.)
- Trengereid rundkøyring - From Trengereid village, we take Route #7 towards the Hardangerfjord. (We usually do not stop here.)
- Hardangervegen - Hardangervegen, or the Hardanger Road, is Norwegian route #7, a tourist attraction in itself. Along the way, we will enjoy stunning views of mountains, lakes, and waterfalls. We will make two photo stops at waterfalls: Fossen Bratte and Steinsdalsfossen.
- Fossen Bratte - We pause at Fossen Bratte waterfall, which stands 259 feet (79 meters) tall. The view is spectacular, and it’s a great spot for memorable photos. A short walk to the waterfall’s base is highly recommended to experience the refreshing mist and pure water droplets.
- Steinsdalsfossen Waterfall - Our next stop is Steinsdalsfossen waterfall, 164 feet (50 meters) tall. Visitors can walk behind the waterfall without getting wet. A walk to the viewpoint behind the waterfall is highly recommended.
- Fyksesund Bridge - After passing through the charming towns of Norheimsund and Øystese, we proceed to Fyksesundet, a narrow fjord crossed by the Fyksesund suspension bridge, constructed in 1937.
- Steinstø Fruktgard - On the opposite side of Fyksesundet is Steinstø, a small farming community with a fruit farm, kiosk, and café. We can stop for coffee, apple pie, and a view of the fjord.
- Hardanger - The Hardangerfjord is Norway’s second-longest fjord. We will travel along it to Granvin, cross it on the Hardanger bridge, and continue to Eidfjord.
- Skjervsfossen Waterfall - Before crossing the Hardangerfjord, we take a brief detour to Skjervsfossen waterfall, featuring twin falls plunging from 150 meters.
- Hardanger Bridge - We reach a narrow section of the Hardangerfjord and cross it on the Hardanger Bridge, a suspension bridge from 2013 with a main span of 1310 meters (4300 ft). This impressive structure is preceded by an 8 km (5 miles) tunnel, with another tunnel on the other side. We stop at a viewpoint overlooking the fjord and bridge.
- Hardangerviddahallen - After passing Eidfjord, a popular cruise destination, we drive to Øvre Eidfjord for lunch at the cosy Hardangervidda Hall Restaurant (open April—October).
There are additional lunch options along the route.
While in Øvre Eidfjord, visitors can explore the “Norwegian Nature Center – Hardanger,” a museum and visitor center for Hardangervidda National Park, focusing on the region’s flora, fauna, geology, and history (open April—October). The entrance fee is not included. A beautiful film by Norwegian-Italian director Ivo Caprino, showcasing the Hardangervidda plateau, is available on 5 screens (Supervideograph system).
- Voringfossen - Our next stop is Vøringsfossen waterfall, 182 meters (597 ft) tall, located at the end of Måbødalen valley where Hardangervidda begins. The viewpoint features secure platforms overhanging the waterfall and canyon, offering mesmerizing views of the cascading waters and rugged valley.
If time permits, we may venture further into the Hardangervidda plateau above the timberline, where the landscape transitions to bare mountains surrounded by rock and lichen.
After Vøringsfossen waterfall, and possibly a short ride up the Hardangervidda plateau, we return to the Hardangerfjord and continue to the Sørfjord.
- Tveitafossen - Our next stop is Husedalen valley, known for its waterfalls. We ascend the valley, stopping at Tveitafossen waterfall and, if accessible, Nyastølfossen (a short hike is required). If time allows and you’re up for it, we can hike further to the third waterfall, Nykkjesøyfossen, before returning to the fjord.
- Odda - We continue south to Odda, the largest settlement on the Hardangerfjord, significant for tourism and industry, recently popularized by the Netflix series Ragnarok. We can pause here for coffee and a snack before heading to Låtefossen waterfall.
- Latefossen Waterfall - Låtefossen is a 541 feet (165 meters) tall waterfall flowing into the river Opo. It is a confluence of two falls, Låtefossen and Skarsfossen, both fed by Lotevatnet Lake. This waterfall was a favorite among 19th-century cruise tourists. This is our southernmost stop before returning to Bergen.
- Folgefonna Tunnel - We head back to Odda and through the Folgefonn Tunnel to the main Hardanger fjord. The Folgefonn Tunnel is Norway’s fourth longest, as of 2020, at 11.15 km long, carved under 4500 feet of rock and the Folgefonna glacier.
- Maurangsfjorden - Beyond the mountain lies Maurangsfjord, a secluded narrow fjord branching from the main Hardangerfjord. We drive along this fjord to Furebergsfossen waterfall.
- Furebergsfossen - Furebergsfossen is the last of the main 7 waterfalls on our journey. The fall is 295 feet (90 meters) tall and flows directly into the fjord’s salty waters.
- Mundheim - We cross the fjord by car ferry, travel along the fjord to Mundheim village, and head towards the neighboring Eikelandsfjord. From here, we drive directly to Bergen.
