Bergenhus Fortress - Bergenhus Fortress and Royal Castle is one of Norway’s oldest and best-preserved stone fortifications, featuring structures dating back to 1240. In medieval times, the area known as Holmen housed the royal residence, a cathedral, several churches, the bishop’s residence, and a Dominican monastery. Excavations have uncovered foundations of buildings believed to predate 1100. In the 13th century, Bergen was Norway’s capital, and Holmen was the primary seat of its rulers. Håkon’s Hall, constructed in 1247, was the largest and most impressive building of the royal residence in the 13th century.
