DAY 2: IZMIR > EPHESUS • ISTANBUL
Ephesus Museum - Following breakfast, a one-hour drive will bring you to the ancient city of Ephesus. Once again, embark on a journey through history. This tour of the Roman capital of Asia Minor features the Odeon, Marble Street, Hadrian Temple, Celcius Library, and the Great Theatre.
Admission fee: 200 TRY per person
The Odeion - Constructed in 150 BC by Publis Vedius Antonius, a wealthy Ephesian, the Odeion is a theater-shaped structure. The hall accommodated 1400 people. Given the prytaneion and the state agora in front of it, it likely served as both a city council venue and a theater for performances. It is evident that the orchestra was covered due to the absence of grooves for rainwater drainage.
Temple of Hadrian - This monument, resembling a temple and known as the Temple of Hadrian, is situated in front of the Scholastica Baths, facing Curetes Street. Discovered in 1956 and reconstructed over the next two years, it was widely believed to be the Temple of Emperor Hadrian, a “neocorate temple” for the official worship of the Roman emperor. Permission to construct such a temple in Ephesus was granted by Hadrian between 130 and 132 CE, and archaeologists were keen to identify the building on Curetes Street as such.
Meryemana (The Virgin Mary’s House) - This revered Christian and Muslim shrine is located near Ephesus. It is widely believed that the Virgin Mary was brought to this stone house by Saint John and resided there.
