Galle Fort - Church Street
Galle’s history spans thousands of years, dating back to biblical times. In more recent history, it was a coveted prize for Western traders seeking wealth and glory. Its beautifully preserved colonial Dutch fort, with its charming city and cobblestone streets, is a place where time seems to stand still. Nearby, visitors can find stunning beaches, rainforests, and other attractions, making it a truly captivating destination. - Galle Fort Lighthouse - The Galle lighthouse is located within the iconic Galle Fort. It is constructed seven meters above the road on the ramparts. This is Sri Lanka’s oldest light station, established in 1848, although the original lighthouse was destroyed by fire in 1934. It was reconstructed to its current height of 26 meters. The light station is situated within the ancient Galle Fort, a UNESCO world heritage site and a renowned tourist attraction, making it the most frequently visited lighthouse in the country.
- Dutch Reformed Church - Initially built in 1640, the current structure dates back to 1752. Its floor is paved with gravestones from Dutch cemeteries, and other notable features include the organ and a striking pulpit crafted from calamander wood, topped by a grand hexagonal canopy.
- Koggala - Stilt fishing is a distinctive fishing method unique to Sri Lanka, known as “the Pearl of the Indian Ocean.” Fishermen sit on a crossbar called a ‘petta’ attached to a vertical pole embedded in the sand a few meters offshore. From this elevated position, the fishermen cast their lines and wait for a fish to be caught. Although the technique appears primitive and ancient, it is a fascinating sight.
- KOSGODA Turtle Conservation and Research Centre - This hatchery was established in 1978 as the first Turtle Hatchery in Sri Lanka, founded by Dr. Upen de Silva & Dr. R. S. B Wickremsinghe.
- Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct - The Old Colombo Dutch Hospital is regarded as the oldest building in the Colombo Fort area, dating back to the Dutch colonial era in Sri Lanka. It is now a heritage building and serves as a shopping and dining precinct.
- Galle Face Green - Galle Face is a 5-hectare ocean-side urban park, stretching 500 meters along the coast, located in the heart of Colombo, the financial and business capital of Sri Lanka.
