Additional Information

Embark on an excursion into Mayan history with a visit to some of Belize’s premier Maya Ruins.

Set within Belize’s Cayo District, across Benque Viejo Road near San Jose Succotz, lies Xunantunich, just a few miles from the Guatemalan border on the west of Belize. The journey to the site involves crossing the Mopan River via a manual ferry at San Jose Succotz. From the river’s far side, it’s a mile upwards to the ruins which can be reached either on foot or by vehicle.

Known as the “Maiden of the Rock”, Xunantunich is the second highest Mayan ruin in Belize. The site’s biggest pyramid, El Castillo, towers at 130 feet over the main square and provides a breathtaking panoramic vista of the Cayo District, Guatemala, and the Mopan River. The ruins have been extensively excavated and features an informative educational museum onsite.

In the vicinity of the ruins, enjoy a traditional Belizean lunch.

Wonderful experience! - I highly recommend Get to Know Belize Adventures! We went on four tours with them and loved them all. Dirk was fabulous as a driver, tour guide, and person. He took us to Xunantunich where another very knowledgeable guide described the Mayan culture and climbed with us to the top of the tallest structure. The drive there and back was fun and informative, too, and gave us a chance to see more of Belize. as well as Guatemala in the distance. Don't miss this!

The adventure of a lifetime - Exploring the country of Belize was so amazing. This Maya ruin was so huge and pristine, I gazed at it in admiration. It was more than worth it. The drive itself was an adventure in its own. We had to cross a hand cranked ferry to cross the river. It was awesome. The restaurant there serves excellent pastries and the cake is delicious. We loved this trip. Thank you to Get to Know Belize Adventures for planning this excursion.

Xunantunich tour is fantastic! - We had a fantastic day touring the Xunantunich ruins site with “Get To Know Belize” and highly respected Mayan guide Elfago Panti Sr. His knowledge of Mayan history and this site was encyclopedic and other guides we saw referred to him as “el jefe” in admiration. He took time to explain everything in detail, answer our questions and was not rushed. This site is impressive and worth a visit. Our driver Dirk was safe, courteous, and extremely knowledgeable about Belize and he gave us an impromptu tour of the Capitol city Belmopan. The drive was beautiful and it was fun chatting with Dirk. Highly recommend this tour.

Best tour operator in Hopkins! - We had the absolute best experience with Get to Know Belize Adventures, so much so that we ended up booking three different services with them after using our resort’s service for two other tours. It’s a family-run operation by Josie and her brothers and sisters, who were so warm and friendly and know all the best kept local secrets and work with the best guides. Their van was also by far the most comfortable we traveled in (I get car sickness, so that mattered to me!) We went to Xunantunich only, which was amazing because we got to spend as much time as we wanted there without being rushed to squeeze in a second activity. Our tour guide at the ruins, Junior, was outstanding and taught us a great deal. He’s very passionate about sharing the site’s history. We also enjoyed a delicious local lunch after the tour, and Greg, our driver, made multiple extra stops on the way home to help us find items we were looking to by. We also wanted to do ziplining and hiking at Bocawina, which our resort didn’t offer, and Josie arranged a custom day trip for us so we could hike Antelope Falls after the morning activity. Our guide that day, Joe, gave us the moral support we needed to make it to the top for incredible views. Get to Know Belize was also much more reasonably priced at the end of the day because they don’t charge extra hidden taxes and fees on top of listed tour prices like the resorts do. We really appreciated their flexibility and help so that we could do exactly what we wanted when it wasn’t offered elsewhere. Highly recommended!

Amazing place, great tour! - My wife and I booked a tour of the Xunantunich ruins and Get To Know Belize is a great outfit! The tour was very organized and ontime. Greg, our driver, was very polite and nice to talk with about everything - including the local culture, his family, the surrounding area, farming, different types of trees, etc. Very informative. Greg was also the guy who picked us up at Dangriga airport to take us to Hopkins, and he also took us on a day trip to Placencia. We loved him! You will too.

Very enjoyable day. - My husband and I enjoyed this trip with Shakim and one other lovely couple from Portland (Hi Kim and Paul!). Shakim was a great guide and very friendly and we all had a very enjoyable day. The ruins at Xunantunich were amazing and we learned a lot about this ancient civilisation. My husband, Rick and I climbed to the top of the temple - it is a strenuous climb but do-able (we are 59 and certainly felt the effects on our knees!) and the view from the top is wonderful. On this trip we also stopped at the Orange Gift Shop;which was very nice and also a quick stop at the inland Blue Hole - a little underwhelming, but all in all we had a great day and are very glad we booked this trip.

Travelers beware !! - We were so excited for our trip to see the Mayan ruins of Xunantunich. I booked this trip a month ago for myself and my husband. I had already purchased our water taxi tickets totaling $130.54 for 2 round trip tickets from San Pedro to Belize City. Less than 24 hours before our tour was supposed to begin I received this message from the tour operator. (Pictured below) I understand people get sick, however given that this was booked a month in advance, paid in full, and other excursions were planned around this, something more needs to be done to rectify the situation. I also have some concerns given that 2 days before this tour was supposed to begin I received another message from the tour operator offering to give me a “cash price” which I respectfully declined given that it was already paid for on my credit card and to be perfectly honest seemed sketchy and not proper procedure when booked through TripAdvisor. (Also pictured below) Seems like a little more than a coincidence that after all of this correspondence my tour is cancelled at the last minute. I did receive a full refund as I should have, however the water taxi tickets are non refundable and I am writing this review to request a refund of an additional $130.54 for the 2 round trip water taxi tickets I paid for in advance of this canceled trip. We had other excursions planned and paid for during our stay in Belize so rebooking was not an option. Since the booking has been canceled by the operator I have no way of responding to the message about joining another tour. Given that I paid for a private tour that is what I expected. It’s unfortunate to have such a negative experience when the majority of the reviews seem positive, I am hoping this is a fluke for the operator and the situation can be rectified before seeking other means to fix this unfortunate situation I was put in. Looking forward to a resolution.
