- Altun Ha - The journey takes travelers through charming rural villages, expansive grassland savannahs, lush mangrove forests, and the vibrant Rain Forest, culminating at the majestic Maya Pyramids of Altun Ha.
Upon arrival, visitors walk to the first Plaza, where they learn about the archaeological discoveries made during the field seasons from 1964 to 1974. The tour then proceeds to the second plaza, showcasing the residential area where excavations uncovered skeletal remains and artifacts, including polychrome vessels.
The highlight of the day is the approach to the Sun Temple, adorned with god masks, and at its summit lies the sacrificial altar. The guide provides insights into the extensive wealth of findings within this structure, including the prized Jade Head, the largest carved object discovered in the Maya world. After taking in the breathtaking views from the top, it’s time to descend and return to the van for the drive back to the city.
- Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary - On August 22, 1998, Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary was designated as Belize’s first Ramsar site due to the wetland’s importance, particularly as a habitat for waterfowl. The Jabiru stork is the sanctuary’s most renowned resident, with Belize hosting the largest nesting population of these magnificent birds in Central America. Jabiru storks arrive in November to nest in the lowland pine savannas, with two pairs known to nest within the sanctuary. After the young birds fledge in April and May, storks from northern and central Belize gather at Crooked Tree lagoons. As the rainy season begins, the birds depart.
