Evidence of Mayan presence at Altun Ha dates back to 200 B.C. The first significant temple was constructed around A.D. 100 near the main reservoir. The area visible today dates to the start of the Classic Period (A.D. 250), serving as the site’s central core for approximately six centuries. The northern plaza (Plaza A) was the main ceremonial area until the end of the Early Classic (around A.D. 550), after which work commenced on Plaza B.
