- Timisoara Historical Center - Begin the walking tour of Timisoara in the downtown quarter of Cetate, where you can admire the city’s iconic image. Discover numerous historic buildings in Art Nouveau or Baroque styles, expansive pedestrian squares rich in European history, and the multicultural essence of the city and the Banat region.
- Timisoara Orthodox Cathedral - The sightseeing tour starts here. Constructed in the late 1930s, the cathedral showcases an eclectic neo-Moldavian style, blending Byzantine, Gothic, Ottoman, and Renaissance elements. Inside, observe the 18th-century altar fragments crafted in the Baroque style. The basement contains collections of religious artifacts, including rare books, icons, and paintings. Look for bullet marks on the steps in front of the cathedral, a testament to the people’s revolution that began in Timisoara.
- Piata Victoriei - Continue the tour with a visit to Victory Square, also known as Opera Square. Established in 1906, the square is home to several theaters, a museum, a monument to King Ferdinand, and a memorial for the 1989 revolution victims. An old artesian well and a Capitoline she-wolf sculpture, a gift from Rome, can also be found here. The ground floors of the 19th-century buildings feature bookshops, art galleries, cafes, and restaurants.
- Libertatii Square - Next, visit Liberty Square, which houses the Old City Hall with its Turkish inscription, showcasing a blend of cultures, religions, and civilizations. It is surrounded by significant buildings, including the city’s oldest, the Casino Military Museum, the old town hall, and the Foreign Ministry. The Sf Ioan Nepomuk Monument (the Catholic Patron in Banat) stands in the center, crafted from sandstone in 1756 by Viennese sculptor Wasserburger Blim, honoring those who perished during the 1738 plague epidemic.
- Unirii Square - Union Square is the oldest square in Timisoara, with architecture distinct from the newer Victory Square. It is bordered by impressive 18th and 19th-century buildings, including the St. George Roman-Catholic Cathedral and the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral with a Bishop’s Residence. The symbolic name “Union” reflects the peaceful coexistence of these two “not-so-in-union” Christian churches facing each other. Until 1919, the square was known as “Lasonczy Market,” in honor of the 16th-century commandant Stefan (Istvan) Lasonchy, who valiantly defended the city from the Turks.
- Serbian Orthodox Episcopal Church - The Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, built between 1745 and 1748, exemplifies the baroque style. The church’s structure contrasts beautifully with the façade of the Bishop’s Residence (Vicariate) beside it. Both buildings testify to the strong Serbian presence in Banat (Timisoara was briefly under Serbian Kingdom control in the past, and it remains close to the Serbian border today).
- Catedrala Sfantul Gheorghe - Designed by Viennese architect Emanuel Fisher von Erlach, the grand Roman Catholic Cathedral also represents the baroque style. Construction began in 1736 and took 18 years to complete. After Fisher von Erlach’s death in 1742, local Timisoara architects Theodor Kostka and Alexander Steinlein led the project. The main altar’s painting of St. George is by Michelangelo Unterberger, and the organ was crafted by Austrian master Carl Leopold Wegenstein.
