- Belgrade - The tour begins at 7 a.m. from your accommodation in Belgrade. The E75, a major European highway, will guide you to Nis, Serbia’s third-largest city and the administrative and cultural hub of the southern region.
- Mediana - Upon arrival after a 2.5-hour drive, the sightseeing tour of Nis commences with a visit to the Archaeological site Mediana, a significant Serbian Late Antiquity site constructed between the 3rd and early 4th centuries. A villa with a peristyle featuring over 1,000m2 of exquisite floor mosaics is the centerpiece of Mediana.
- Skull Tower - The Nis Sightseeing Tour continues with a visit to Skull Tower, the city’s top attraction, a unique global landmark, and one of the most somber attractions in the Balkans. This chilling monument was erected following the 1809 battle for Nis’s liberation as a warning against rebellion against the Ottoman Empire. Originally composed of 952 human skulls, 58 remain today.
- Red Cross Nazi Concentration Camp - Next on the itinerary is the Red Cross Concentration Camp, one of the few Nazi Concentration Camps in Europe. During World War II, Jews, Roma, Serbs, women, and children were detained here. The three-story building houses permanent exhibitions on each floor. Visitors will gain insight into Serbia’s WWII history by viewing prisoners’ personal items, hearing stories of camp life, learning about the first major escape from a Nazi concentration camp in Europe, and exploring ten prison cells.
- Bubanj Memorial Park - To complete the narrative, the tour proceeds to Bubanj Memorial Park, where over 10,000 individuals were taken from the concentration camp for execution. The main attraction is the Monument Three Fists, symbolizing resistance and commemorating the terror and human suffering.
- Nis Fortress - The tour continues with a visit to Nis Fortress, situated on the right bank of the Nisava River. It is regarded as one of Eastern Europe’s most beautiful and well-preserved fortresses, with remnants dating back to ancient Roman times.
- King Milan Square - From here, the walking portion of the tour begins, showcasing major attractions in the city center such as the Banovina Building, the most beautiful building in Nis and former government seat, King Milan Square with The Monument to the Liberators, Cair’s Fountain, the most beautiful and well-preserved drinking fountain in the city, the Memorial of Constantine the Great, and The City Hall built in 1925. The tour concludes in Kazandzijsko Sokace or “Tinkers Alley,” a cobbled street in the old town. Once a craftsmen’s alley, it is now a popular tourist area and the best place to experience the local atmosphere. Filled with bars and traditional restaurants, it’s perfect for sampling local delicacies. The Monument of Stevan Sremac and Kalca, located at the entrance, is the top photo spot for visitors. Here, a coffee break will be taken before heading to Devil’s Town.
- Davolja Varos - A drive of less than 2 hours from Nis through southern Serbia leads to Devil’s Town, a nominee for the New Seven Wonders of Nature. The complex features two natural phenomena: 202 soil figures and two springs of highly acidic, mineral-rich water (Red Well). To reach the platform overlooking these soil figures, a hike through the “forest” for 850m is required. During the hike, visitors will pass by Red Well and a Saxon mining pane dating back to the 13th century. On the observation platform, in addition to capturing memorable photos, visitors will be enthralled by a local legend about wedding guests turned to stone.
After exploring Devil’s Town, a lunch break will be taken at a nearby local restaurant.
