- Belgrade - The journey begins with a pickup from your hotel or accommodation in Belgrade, heading towards Southern Serbia. After a little over two hours on the highway, we will arrive in Niš.
- Niš - The day is dedicated to the birthplace of the renowned Roman Emperor Constantine the Great. Over the next three hours, you will explore the key attractions in Serbia’s third-largest city, with our guide sharing stories of its rich history, which dates back to pre-Roman times.
- Red Cross Nazi Concentration Camp - Our first stop is the Red Cross Nazi Concentration Camp, now a museum. Operated by the German Gestapo, the camp held approximately 30,000 Jews, Serbians, and Romas during World War II. As a transit camp, few were killed on-site; most were taken to Bubanj Hill (in Niš) for execution or sent to Auschwitz, Dachau, or other concentration camps. Notably, on February 12, 1942, the camp witnessed the first mass escape of prisoners in occupied Europe, with 105 inmates successfully fleeing.
- Bubanj Memorial Park - To wrap up our WWII narrative, we will visit Bubanj Hill, located 3km from the city center. Here stands one of Serbia’s most iconic Yugoslav-era memorials, featuring three massive fists rising from the ground, created by Croatian sculptor Ivan Sabolić. These symbolize the resistance and suffering of men, women, and children (or, as some interpret, Serbs, Jews, and Roma) during WWII. This hill was the site of mass executions by the Nazis, where nearly 10,000 prisoners from the concentration camp were executed.
- Skull Tower - Our next destination is the infamous Skull Tower, a unique monument globally, erected by the Ottomans as a warning against rebellion. Originally containing 952 skulls, 59 remain today, still conveying the tower’s original horror. Destroying the tower was never considered; it stands as a testament to the sacrifices made by ancestors for Serbia’s liberation, serving as a silent monument to their struggle.
- Niš Fortress - We will then visit the Niš Fortress, situated on the bank of the Nišava River. It took its final form in 1723 when the Turks constructed it, marking the end of their rule in the area. Its construction involved over 40 stonecutters from Constantinople and around 400 bricklayers from Niš. Although the current structure was built by the Turks, forts have existed on this site since ancient Roman times. Today, the fortress is a cultural landmark of great significance and hosts numerous cultural and artistic events.
- Niš - Continuing our tour, we will pass by the city’s main attractions, including the Banovina Building, Niš Liberators Monument at King Milan Square, and the monument of the esteemed Serbian writer Stevan Sremac, celebrated as one of the greatest Serbian comedy writers in history.
Concluding our tour, we will visit the Archaeological Hall of the Niš National Museum, showcasing numerous exhibits that vividly narrate Niš’s history and culture from the Neolithic Age and Roman period to the Middle Ages.
Afterward, you will have free time for personal activities in Niš and to sample some of the traditional delicacies for which Niš is renowned.
At the designated time, we will return to our vehicle, and after approximately two hours, you will be back at your hotel.
- Belgrade - The tour concludes with transportation back to your hotel or accommodation in Belgrade, arriving in the afternoon. End of services.
