Beirut - 9:00 AM — Departure from Beirut
An English-speaking driver will pick you up from your hotel in Beirut and drive north through the Dog River valley. The canyon walls here are etched with inscriptions from Egyptian pharaohs, Assyrian kings, and Roman emperors, leading you toward Jeita Grotto. - Jeita Grotto - Begin your day underground. Jeita Grotto, a UNESCO tentative World Heritage Site and a top-five finalist in the New 7 Wonders of Nature, consists of two interconnected limestone caves stretching 9 kilometers beneath the Lebanese mountains. Explore the upper cave on foot, marveling at the towering stalactites and stalagmites, some over 8 meters tall, formed over millions of years. The lower cave is traversed by a silent electric boat along an underground river, offering a journey through chambers of stunning natural beauty where silence reigns. It is one of Lebanon’s most visited and memorable natural attractions.
- Téléferique Harissa - Transition from underground to above the clouds by boarding the Harissa Téléférique at the Jounieh seafront. Ascend 650 meters above sea level, with the Mediterranean stretching below and the Lebanese mountains rising ahead. The aerial views over Jounieh Bay during the ascent are among the most photographed in Lebanon, and the cable car ride itself is one of the country’s most thrilling experiences.
- The Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon - At the summit, stand before the iconic bronze statue of Our Lady of Lebanon, 8.5 meters tall with arms outstretched toward the sea, visible for miles around. Surrounded by the Maronite Basilica and nearby churches, Harissa is a significant Christian pilgrimage site in the Middle East, where faith and natural beauty coexist harmoniously. The view alone is worth the journey, even without the shrine.
- Monastery Saint Maroun - This is the most poignant stop of the day and, for many, the most unforgettable experience in Lebanon. The Monastery of Saint Maron at Annaya is where Saint Charbel Makhlouf, Lebanon’s most cherished saint and a revered figure in the Catholic world, spent the last 23 years of his life as a hermit. He withdrew from the monastery to live in a small hermitage in the mountains above, passing away here on Christmas Eve 1898. Canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1977, he was the first Middle Eastern saint to be canonized in the modern era. His tomb in the monastery church attracts millions of pilgrims annually, who report healings, answered prayers, and a profound sense of peace in this remote mountain location. The hermitage where he lived, a tiny stone cell on the mountainside, is also open to visitors. Whether visiting as a pilgrim or a traveler intrigued by the story, Annaya is a place that leaves a lasting impact.
