The booking worked well for us. - It was well worth booking the tickets via this method as you do need to have pre-booked tickets to enter the square. Take your passport for entry, print off the booking with the date and number of people on the booking to show staff, and be prepared for many security checks and a long queue on the way in. The tickets worked well and we entered with our passports, but we were asked for the proof booking by staff at the start of the queue as they want to check you have made a booking as you will not get in if you haven't. The staff were really polite and helpful and pointed us to the correct queue. We just booked for Tianamen Square, but there are seperate queses for the Forbidden Palace. There are toilets and vendors at the entrance of the square. Take your own toilet roll and hand sanitiser as with everywhere in Beijing. The square itself is incredible. It felt so surreal standing there knowing all the history of the place. Well worth a visit if you are in Beijing. Lots of locals welcomed us to Beijing and enjoyed the opportunity to speak English to us. We had an interesting couple of hours in the square.

Book tickets Tiananmen Square - Booking tickets was very easy. After booking you received an email to provide your passport details. And a week before, you received your confirmation that booking had been made. Via login you could download confirmation if there are problems at entrance. But everything was neatly arranged via passport at entrance.

Perfect! - All perfect. We received the directions and a capture of the access reservation. All as directed. We passed the check by showing the passport and the capture. In the early hours the control queue was about half an hour.

CHOOSE YOUR ENTRANCE WISELY & LEAVE TIME FOR THE PALACE! - My own fault for not researching the options more carefully. Do NOT choose the main entrance as your entry point - it was an hour and a half wait in a jam packed holding space. I had travelled by train 2 days earlier to Tian’anmen, not realizing a reservation was required. Had I had one at that railway exit entry point, judging by the queue, I would have easily entered in 15-20 minutes. It’s the forensic security search that takes the time (and creates the agonizing - if you have ankle/foot issues - wait) . They were, however, lovely in the checkpoint. Smiling, friendly (the women, not the boys so much, who understandably just looked bored). As I entered I was rewarded with the spectacle of a phalanx of green-coated guards emerging from below ground and marching in formation ahead of me. The experience of being there was clouded by my physical discomfort, so it was hard to feel the exhilaration I’d experienced it in planning the visit. The square is nonetheless indeed imposing - the scale of the buildings, the majesty of the fountains accompanied by operatic singing as you gaze across Chang’an Avenue at Mao’s image on the Gate Tower. There is also grief in those flagstones…I had nothing left for exploring the Palace Museum, but I realized later it’s a constellation of palaces, pavilions and galleries that would be wonderful to explore at leisure. Alas, as it was, I hobbled past the multitude of beautiful traditionally dressed women and men being photographed by the canal, and out into bustling Donghuamen Street and hotel-wards. Another time perhaps, now I know the hacks for streamlining the experience!

Tiananmen Square - Be prepared for the crowds. We arrived before 10am, and there were already many visitors clearing the security checks to enter the square. As we were concerned about the waiting time before we could reach the square, we decided to turn back and proceed to the Forbidden City instead, not wanting to risk our booking for the morning session. It is advisable to plan to visit Tiananmen Square early in the morning, if you are also visiting the Forbidden City.

I didn't like it... - I didn't like it at all. They ransacked my backpack and requisitioned the flag of another state I had visited before coming to China
