Cuandixia was established during the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) by the Han family who relocated from Shanxi Province. By the end of the Qing dynasty, Cuandixia thrived on commerce involving coal, fur, and grain. The word Cuan (爨) translates to “kitchen range” in Chinese, and in 1958, it was simplified to Chuan (川). The village was named to signify a place of warmth and hospitality. It is renowned for its 400-year history that dates back to the Ming era when ancestors from Shanxi Province settled here. It serves as a strategic point on the route from Beijing to Shanxi. All residents bear the surname Han, indicating a common lineage. The village’s centuries-old homes still reflect the architectural styles of the Ming and Qing dynasties, making it a significant historical site that attracts numerous visitors from nearby cities. There are 500 remaining houses adorned with stone and brick carvings, calligraphy, and paintings featuring motifs such as bats, pied magpies, peonies, waterlilies, each symbolizing specific meanings. We will spend approximately 2 to 3 hours exploring the village. For lunch, we will dine at a local, modest eatery to experience the typical cuisine of the villagers. Please note that the cost of lunch is not included. After the meal, we will embark on a 2.5-hour drive back to the hotel.
