Beekeeping 301 – Hands-on – in the apiary – 2-3 hours - $150 pp
Limited to 12 - 16 students maximum, with 4-6 per instructor
*Pre-requisite of 2 prior bee classes, with at least one class from our farm
We will put you in control of a hive inspection and help you recognize the bee stages on a working bee farm in SW Austin. See Agenda below:
Lighting a Smoker
Putting on the Beesuit/Veil/Gloves, etc
Working in the apiary – first watching then performing a hive inspection in both Langs and TopBar hives.
Queen spotting at every hive
Recognizing Eggs, Larva, House Bees, Foragers, Drones, Queens
Hive management of problems that arise in the apiary
Distinguishing brood comb, drone comb, honey, and pollen
We have bee suits, gloves, veils, smokers, tools and equipment for you to borrow or purchase, as needed.
All Students must sign a waiver before working with bees in the apiary. Please wear CLOSED-TOED SHOES or BOOTS, LONG SOCKS, LONG PANTS, and bring a long-sleeved shirt. NO SANDLES, NO BARE ANKLES, NO EXCEPTIONS.
- Hands-on classes may need to be rescheduled if weather is adverse for bees.
This is a working apiary with live honey bees on site. Although a stinging episode would be extremely rare, it is possible to be stung by a honey bee when visiting an apiary. Please do not attend if you believe you have severe bee allergies or have ever experienced anaphylactic shock after a bee sting.
Beekeeping Classes: No Refunds. If you are unable to attend a class you are registered for, you may reschedule into another class on a different date by sending an email to Tanya. This is subject to class space and availability.
