Beauly Priory was established in the 13th century as a monastery for the Valliscaulian order of monks from Dijon, France. It was destroyed in the 16th century by Oliver Cromwell’s forces. For many years, it served as a burial site for the chiefs of Clan Fraser and Mackenzie and their families. The site also has an Outlander connection, as it is where Claire met the Seer.
- Urquhart Castle - Urquhart Castle is situated on a promontory extending into Loch Ness and has been the site of numerous battles over the years. The views of Loch Ness from the castle are breathtaking. During the visit, guests can explore the ruins of this 1,000-year-old castle and venture down to the water’s edge of Loch Ness. Keep an eye out for a possible sighting of Nessie.
- Culloden Battlefield - The Battle of Culloden in 1746 was the last battle fought on British soil. Visitors can explore the museum and walk around the main areas of the battlefield where the heaviest fighting occurred. Highlights include the memorial cairn, the Well of the Dead, the clan gravestones, and Leanach Cottage. This visit is a must for Outlander fans.
- Clava Cairns - The tour includes a visit to Clava Cairns, where guests can enter two of the three cairns. This 4,000-year-old Bronze Age cemetery inspired Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series. Visitors will see the cleft stone and the stone circles surrounding the cairns.
- Leakey’s Second-hand Bookshop - Located on one of the oldest streets in Inverness, Church Street, the first stop is Leakey’s Bookshop, which was a government hospital after the Battle of Culloden.
- Old High St Stephen’s Church - Behind Leakey’s Bookshop stands the Old High Church/St Stephen’s, where Jacobite prisoners were taken after the Battle of Culloden. Musket holes in the church wall, where the Jacobite prisoners were executed, are still visible. From the graveyard, visitors can see Balnain House, another government hospital post-Culloden, and St Mary’s Church, which has Outlander connections.
- Abertarff House - Further along Church Street is Abertarff House, the oldest house in Inverness, which once served as the townhouse for the Fraser Chiefs.
- Cawdor Castle - Cawdor Castle will reopen on April 27, 2024. With its Macbeth connections, Cawdor Castle is one of the few castles in the Highland area unaffected by the Jacobite uprisings. It has been home to the Thanes of Cawdor for centuries. Visitors can tour the castle, explore the magnificent gardens, and meet the Dowager Countess of Cawdor, who still resides in the castle.

The first stop is Beauly Priory, a 13th-century monastery originally built for Valliscaulian monks from Dijon, France, which was later destroyed by Cromwell’s forces in the 16th century. A brief pause is made to admire some Highland Cattle (see photo) before continuing over Culnakirk Hill to Drumnadrochit, where Urquhart Castle awaits. This castle, perched on a promontory extending into Loch Ness, offers stunning views of the loch and is near the site where St. Columba is said to have encountered the Loch Ness Monster. The tour then proceeds towards Inverness, passing the Hill of the Fairies. In Inverness, there are stops to view the Cathedral and The Old High Church, as well as passing by Inverness Castle and the statue of Flora Macdonald. The journey continues to Clava Cairns, with lunch at Cawdor Castle, before concluding at Culloden Battlefield.
