Mont Saint Michel is the most popular attraction in Normandy and ranks among the top visited sites in France. The initial structure on the rock was erected in 708. A few decades later, it emerged as a significant pilgrimage destination for Christians worldwide. Due to the efforts of the religious community on the Mont, the site became an intellectual hub in Europe, where thousands of books, manuscripts, and charters were produced.
In the 19th century, Mont Saint Michel’s significance waned, and it was converted into a prison following the French Revolution in 1789. From 1793 to 1863, it gained a notorious reputation and was dubbed the Bastille of the seas. The building suffered from neglect during this period and nearly vanished after the French ceased using it as a prison. Thankfully, it was rescued from ruin, and numerous architects have restored it from then until today.
