- The Circus - The Circus serves as the central hub of Basseterre, recognized as a landmark and a favored gathering spot. Its origins trace back to a fire that ravaged Basseterre on July 4th, 1867, devastating the area east of West Square Street. The fire department’s inefficiencies contributed to the disaster’s scale. During Basseterre’s reconstruction, streets were redesigned for better fire truck access, including the widening of Fort Street and the establishment of the Circus.
- Berkeley Memorial - Erected in 1883, the Berkeley Memorial was the sole public monument honoring an individual in St. Kitts for many years. It commemorates Thomas Berkeley Hardtman Berkeley, a legislator and owner of several estates, including Fountain, Greenland, Greenhill, Ottleys, Shadwell, and Stone Fort.
- Independence Square - Formerly known as Pall Mall Square, Independence Square was renamed on September 19, 1983, to celebrate the birth of the new nation of St. Christopher and Nevis. Located on Basseterre’s eastern side near Newtown, its design resembles a Union Jack, with surrounding streets and houses dating back to the mid-eighteenth century.
- Immaculate Conception Co-Cathedral Catholic Church - The Co-Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is an ornate grey stone church situated on the eastern side of Independence Square. During the early French occupation of St. Kitts, the Jesuits built a Roman Catholic Church dedicated to Our Lady. Notre Dame was burned in 1706 during the Anglo-French war and later rebuilt as St. George’s Anglican Church. The Catholic congregation in St. Kitts significantly declined after the Treaty of Utrecht.
- St. George’s Anglican Church - St. George’s Anglican Church is the largest church in Basseterre, located at the head of Church Street. It resembles an English parish church, with heavy andesite rock walls and a slate roof. Like many Basseterre buildings, it has experienced numerous challenges, often rising from the ashes like the mythical Phoenix.
- The War Memorial - Originally unveiled in 1926 at the site now occupied by the Post Office, the War Memorial honors those who died in the First World War.
- Old Road Bay - Old Road Town was settled on January 28, 1624, by Thomas Warner, his wife Rebecca, his son Edward, and 14 others. Initially, the settlers had good relations with the island’s native Carib residents, though this was short-lived. Warner was drawn to the island by its tobacco crop, which initially supported the settlement. The colony thrived, leading to more settlements, and by 1727, Basseterre became the capital following the French expulsion in 1713.
- Bloody Point - Located west of Challengers Village, Bloody Point is named after the Massacre of the Kalinago that occurred nearby. English and French settlements were established on St. Kitts in 1624 and 1625. From the outset, Warner and his men treated the Tegreman and his people as adversaries.
- Wingfield-Phillips Rain Forest Nature Trail - Wingfield Estate belonged to John Jeafferson, who, along with his brother Samuel, joined Thomas Warner in the initial colonization attempt. In 1660, Christopher Jeafferson inherited it and leased it to Charles Pym. The first permanent English Caribbean plantation settlement was in the area now occupied by Wingfield and Romney estates. The settlement’s fortified buildings were near the Kalinago’s spiritual sites, causing anxiety over the newcomers’ presence. Cultural conflicts arose as the Kalinago offered hospitality, but Europeans often misunderstood their social norms, leading to unacceptable behavior and increased tension.
- Romney Manor, Home of Caribelle Batik - Romney Manor is a historic estate, initially home to Kalinago Chief Tegraman, who provided food and shelter to Thomas Warner and his men in 1623. They were the first British settlers on St. Kitts, known as the mother colony of the West Indies.
- Timothy Hill - Timothy Hill offers a breathtaking photo opportunity with a 360-degree view of the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Friar’s and Frigate Bays, Nevis, and the hilly peninsula.
