- Immaculate Conception Co-Cathedral Catholic Church - The CO-CATHEDRAL OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION is a beautifully crafted church made of grey stone, situated on the eastern side of Independence Square. During the early French occupation of St. Kitts, the Jesuits constructed a Roman Catholic Church dedicated to Our Lady. Notre Dame was destroyed by fire in 1706 during the Anglo-French war and was later rebuilt as St. George’s Anglican Church. The Catholic community in St. Kitts significantly declined after the Treaty of Utrecht.
- Independence Square - Formerly known as Pall Mall Square, INDEPENDENCE SQUARE was renamed on September 19, 1983, to celebrate the formation of the new nation of St. Christopher and Nevis. It is located on the eastern side of Basseterre, adjacent to Newtown. Its design resembles a Union Jack, and the surrounding streets and houses date back to the mid-eighteenth century. Unfortunately, many have been lost to time and environmental damage. Some, like the Court House and Public Library, were destroyed by fire and have been rebuilt.
- St. George’s Anglican Church - ST. GEORGE’S ANGLICAN CHURCH is the largest church in Basseterre, located at the head of Church Street, and resembles an English parish church. The exterior walls are made of heavy andesite rock, and the roof is covered in slate. Like many buildings in Basseterre, this church has experienced its share of challenges, often rising from the ashes like the mythical Phoenix.
In 1635, at the request of the directors of the Company of the Isles of America, the Provincial of the Capuchin Friars of Normandy sent Fathers Jerome, Marc, and Pacifique de Provins to attend to the spiritual needs of the French colonists on St. Kitts and to attempt the conversion of the remaining Kalinago population after the 1627 massacre. In Basseterre, they built a place of worship described by Rochefort as a fair Church capable of holding a very large congregation: The structure is wooden, raised on a foundation of Free-stone: Instead of glass windows, there are only turned pillars, resembling a balcony. It is covered with red slate. The Friars also had churches in Cayon and Capisterre, but in 1646, Governor De Poincy, suspecting them of opposing him, ordered their departure from the colony. He replaced them with the Jesuits. In 1672, they constructed a church named Notre Dame.
- The War Memorial - Originally unveiled in 1926 at the site now occupied by the Post Office, THE WAR MEMORIAL honored those who perished in the First World War.
In January 1926, Administrator St. Johnston wrote to the Crown Agents requesting a book showcasing War Memorials in English villages as a guide for decision-making. He received a publication titled Portfolio of War Memorials. There was concern about the memorial’s cost being a public expense at such a late stage.
- Bloody Point - Located west of Challengers Village, Bloody Point derives its name from the Massacre of the Kalinago that occurred nearby.
- Romney Manor - Spanning approximately 8 acres, these grounds boast a rich history dating back to the 1600s. Before the European conquest of the island, which began in 1623, there is substantial evidence that Carib Indian Chief Tegreman’s village was situated here. Petroglyphs on the Wingfield Estate confirm the presence of Amerindians during the property’s history.
Romney Manor & Wingfield Estate have had only five family owners to date. The first, Sam Jeffreson II, the great, great, great grandfather of Thomas Jefferson (3rd president of the U.S.A), purchased the property in 1625.
The modest house, once called the “red house” to reflect Jeffreson’s Quaker roots, was renamed Romney Manor upon its mid-17th-century acquisition by the Earl of Romney. In 1834, defying British Parliament’s instructions, Lord Romney declared his enslaved Africans free men, making it the first estate in St. Kitts to do so.
- Wingfield Estate Sugar Plantation Ruins - Adjacent to Wingfield River in a lush rainforest in Old Road Town, St. Kitts, Wingfield Estate is nestled in the scenic foothills of the island’s central mountain range, with elevations exceeding 3000 ft. A unique feature of this area is the Wingfield watershed, a natural resource covering hundreds of acres, channeling water into Wingfield River. The watershed supplies more than ¾ of the island’s water needs.
Wingfield Estate is one of four locations on St. Kitts with 17th-century Amerindian petroglyphs (rock carvings or inscriptions). The petroglyphs at Wingfield Estate are considered among the finest examples of rock carvings in the Lesser Antilles and are one of the most accessible on St. Kitts. Local folklore suggests that Carib Chief Tegreman, a powerful Amerindian leader who ruled several islands, had his village within the grounds of Romney Manor.
- Timothy Hill - Timothy Hill is a favored lookout point located a short distance from Frigate Beach. It offers a view of the sparkling Atlantic Ocean meeting the Caribbean Sea. From this vantage point, one can see lush, green foliage and the gently sloping hills of the southeast peninsula of St. Kitts. The neighboring island of Nevis is also visible in the distance.
