- Port Olimpic - Located across from the Vila Olímpica neighborhood, Port Olimpic was constructed in 1990 as part of the area’s redevelopment in Barcelona. Designed by architects Oriol Bohigas, Josep Martorell, David Mackay, and Albert Puigdomènech, the marina was created to meet high standards for a sports marina and hosted the sailing events during the 1992 Olympic Games. It features 756 berths for yachts, and its entrance is visible from anywhere in Barcelona.
Flanking the marina are two skyscrapers: the Mapfre Tower and the Hotel Arts, with Frank Gehry’s stunning goldfish sculpture at its base, and nearby, the Gran Casino de Barcelona. Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy yachting or other sailing activities here, and during the summer, the beaches on either side of the marina – Somorrostro and Nova Icària – offer ideal spots for sunbathing or a refreshing swim in the sea.
- Gold Fish Sculpture (Escultura el Peix d’Or) - The Fish sculpture by architect Frank Gehry, a Pritzker Prize winner in 1989, has become an iconic symbol of post-Olympic Barcelona, appearing to float on the Mediterranean waters. The sunlight reflects off the scales of this sculpture, which overlooks the waterfront of the Olympic Marina and Barcelona’s beaches.
In 1992, Olympic Barcelona was revitalizing its seafront. A new Olympic Marina was emerging, dominated by its twin towers. On one side stood the Mapfre Tower; on the other, the Hotel Arts. Frank Gehry placed his fish sculpture at the base of the hotel. The sculpture, 56 meters long and 35 meters high, seems poised to leap into the Mediterranean’s blue waters.
- Port Vell (Old Port) - Port Vell, meaning “Old Harbor” in English, is a waterfront harbor in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, and part of the Port of Barcelona. It was developed as part of an urban renewal initiative before the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Previously, it was a neglected area with empty warehouses, railroad yards, and factories. The complex now attracts 16 million visitors annually.
Today, it serves as a central hub and tourist attraction, featuring the Maremàgnum (a mall with shops, a multiplex cinema, bars, and restaurants), IMAX Port Vell, and Europe’s largest aquarium, housing 8,000 fish and 11 sharks in 22 tanks filled with six million liters (1.6 million US gallons) of seawater. A pedestrian walkway, Rambla de Mar, connects La Rambla to Port Vell and includes a swing bridge to allow ships to enter and exit the harbor.
