Never visited a hospital on any of our vacations - this one is a true experience - Much much much better than expected_ a must see and experience when in Barcelona! The story and history behind this site is truly one of a kind! We were two couples and followed the audio tour - extremely informative and easy!

Unmissable jewel of modernist architecture and Unesco World Heritage - This complex (Unesco World Heritage Site since 1997), designed by Lluis Domènech i Montaner and built between 1902 and 1930, was the site of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau from 1916 to 2009 and is considered an absolute masterpiece of modernist architecture. Along the way you will visit the gardens, the tunnel, the operating block (with surgical instruments of the past), the Sala Ipostila old hospital pavilions (many have undergone modifications) such as the Padiglion Sant Salvador, Sant Rafael, del Carme and Administration. Today some pavilions (not open to visitors) are often used by associations of great social importance as study/work spaces for cultural and sustainability activities. The visit is absolutely recommended, because it is one of the most interesting and original attractions that do not belong to the world of Gaudi. Please note: for Barcelona Card holders 20% discount.

So worth a visit....take a break from Gaudi!!! - Oh my God this place is fantastic! I rate it right along with the Sagrada Familia and feel everyone should go see it. Originally a hospital, it's really beautiful, in Art Nouveau style (oh the tiles....just beautiful!!) with different pavilions for the different wards, male/female, different types of illness/condition. Clearly, some had fallen into disrepair and a project to renovate is ongoing, but some parts are simply stunning and the exhibition areas have really good information. In the central courtyards you can sit, and for us at this time of year there were orange trees heavy with fruit all around, plus other lovely plants eg lavender. Barcelona isn't only Gaudi!!!!

Little inside - Very little to do and see aside from the external architecture. Gaudi’s architecture is beautiful however Barcelona has no shortage of great locations designed by him.
