Discovering the Timeless Charm of St. Nicholas Abbey in Barbados
Drawn by the allure of history and culture, I ventured inland to St. Nicholas Abbey in Barbados. This majestic plantation house and rum distillery offered a journey through time, with breathtaking architecture, handcrafted rum, and a scenic railway tour that revealed the island’s stunning landscapes.
A Step Back in Time at St. Nicholas Abbey
The moment I set foot on the grounds of St. Nicholas Abbey, I felt as though I had been transported back in time. The air was filled with the sweet scent of sugarcane, and the lush gardens whispered stories of the past. As a former professional surfer, I’ve always been drawn to the ocean, but this time, the allure of history and culture pulled me inland. The plantation house, with its exquisite architecture and rich history, was a sight to behold. I wandered through rooms filled with antiques and artifacts, each piece telling a story of the people who lived and worked here over the centuries. The highlight for me was the old film from the 1940s, a priceless glimpse into Barbados’ past, narrated by a charming family member who brought the history to life with every word.
The Art of Rum Making
While many might mistake St. Nicholas Abbey for a church, it’s actually one of the oldest rum distilleries on the island. The process of rum-making here is a true art form, with each bottle handcrafted and labeled by a lovely lady who adds a personal touch to every creation. I couldn’t resist having a bottle specially engraved as a memento of my visit. Watching the sugarcane being crushed and talking to the friendly staff was a brilliant experience. The rum tasting was a delight, with the 8, 10, and 15-year-old rums offering a symphony of flavors that danced on my palate. The lunch and afternoon tea at the cafe were equally memorable, with proper teapots, china, and the best banana bread I’ve ever tasted. It was a culinary experience that perfectly complemented the historical journey.
Scenic Railway and Beyond
After exploring the Abbey, I embarked on the scenic railway tour, a breathtaking journey through the stunning countryside of Barbados. The picturesque landscapes unfolded like a painting, with the great Mahogany trees lining the path and the fabulous views of the east coast from Cherry Tree Hill. The cool leafy walks in the gardens, the ponds with lilies, and the croquet lawn added to the charm of the place. It was a day filled with discovery and wonder, a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. As I made my way back to the coast, the ocean waves called to me once more, but the memories of St. Nicholas Abbey lingered, a testament to the island’s rich heritage and the stories waiting to be told.
