- Cadillac Mountain - Cadillac Mountain stands as the highest point within Acadia National Park, reaching a peak elevation of 1,530 feet. As the tallest point on the eastern seaboard, it is the first place to witness the sunrise in the contiguous United States. Visitors can drive to the summit, which offers breathtaking views of Bar Harbor, the Porcupine Islands, cruise ships in Frenchman’s Bay, and the expansive Atlantic Ocean. A well-maintained granite and cement path circles the summit, providing a pleasant 15 to 20-minute walk for those seeking a bit of exercise.
- Sand Beach - Sand Beach is a picturesque stop where visitors can descend to the shore for photos. It is one of the prime locations during the excursion to get close to the Atlantic Ocean. Spending 10 to 15 minutes here is recommended to enjoy the scenery, take a short stroll, and capture some memorable pictures.
- Thunder Hole - Thunder Hole is a renowned ocean-side attraction within Acadia National Park. This impressive granite formation has been shaped by the relentless waves of the Atlantic Ocean and natural forces since the last Ice Age. The best time to hear the thunderous roar of the ocean crashing into Thunder Hole’s cave is a few hours before high tide. Known as “Thunder Cave” on some old maps, visitors should be cautious as getting too close can result in getting soaked. The granite, with its striking salmon-pink hue, is particularly beautiful along the nearby shoreline. On stormy days, park rangers may limit or close access to this attraction.
- Park Loop Road - The 27-mile Park Loop Road is the main scenic drive within Acadia National Park. At the average speed limit, it can be completed in about an hour. Most groups prefer to make several stops along the way. Visitors have the opportunity to step out, take photos, and explore. For those who prefer less walking, many of Acadia National Park’s highlights can be enjoyed from the comfort of their vehicle.
- Otter Cliff - The loop road in Acadia National Park takes visitors over and around Otter Point, home to the highest cliff face on the contiguous United States’ seaboard. A beautifully constructed two-level granite road offers stunning vistas directly from the vehicle. The nearby ringing buoy provides a charming sound for most visitors.
- Little Hunters Beach - Little Hunter’s Beach exemplifies a classic cobblestone beach. These beaches are more common in the area and are less protected than sandy beaches. On a cobblestone beach, loose sand and smaller objects are washed out to sea, leaving behind larger rocks, or cobblestones, which are smoothed over time. The unique sound of cobblestones clicking together as waves ebb and flow is a distinctive feature. Proximity to the Bay of Fundy, known for its extreme tide shifts, results in significant tidal changes along the Maine coast. Most coves are exposed to the open ocean, causing loose sand to be carried away with each tide, leaving behind larger rocks.
- Sieur de Monts Spring - Sieur de Monts Spring is a natural spring in Acadia. George Dorr, the first superintendent and founding father of Acadia National Park, referred to it as “The Sweet Waters of Acadia.” The Wildwood Gardens are a popular spot for a leisurely walk if time permits. Acadia National Park’s Nature Center is located here, often staffed by a ranger available for questions. The Abbe Museum, open during the summer, offers a small facility with artifacts and history of the area’s indigenous tribes.
- Carriage Roads - During the tour, visitors will see examples of the Carriage Road system within Acadia National Park. Designed and constructed by John Rockefeller Jr., it spans approximately 50 miles around the park’s lakes, ponds, and mountains. A drive by Wildwood Stables allows for a glimpse of horses enjoying a pleasant trot on the Carriage Road system.
- Jordan Pond - Jordan Pond is a freshwater pond along Acadia National Park’s loop road. Simply driving along the road provides stunning views of Jordan Pond as it passes through the valley of several interior mountains. Jordan Pond is home to the only restaurant within Acadia National Park. The Jordan Pond House restaurant is renowned for serving tea and popovers pond-side. The largest gift shop in Acadia National Park is located here. Carriage roads and hiking trails are available along the banks of Jordan Pond.
- Eagle Lake Acadia National Park - Eagle Lake is a freshwater lake situated at the base of Cadillac Mountain and several others, easily visible from Acadia National Park’s loop road. There are excellent views from a pull-over spot about a third of the way up Cadillac Mountain summit road. John Rockefeller Jr. ensured his famous Carriage Roads encircled Eagle Lake. A six-mile Carriage Road loop surrounds the lake and connects to the rest of Acadia National Park’s Carriage Road system.
- Bar Harbor - Acadia National Park surrounds the village of Bar Harbor, a charming New England fishing port and a seafood lover’s paradise. Lobster from these icy Atlantic waters is exceptionally fresh and succulent. Bar Harbor is visible from various points during the excursion, with the best view from the summit of Cadillac Mountain, a quarter of a mile above the village. The tour includes a drive through most of the village, highlighting historical points of interest.
