At the summit, enjoy a 20-minute walk along a cement and granite path if you wish. Remember to bring a windbreaker, as the wind can make it quite chilly at the top.
- Sand Beach - Sand Beach is the largest recreational beach for visitors in Acadia National Park. Many adventurous individuals take a dip in its chilly waters, especially during July and August. Dipping your toes in the cold Atlantic Ocean is enjoyable year-round. Sand Beach is perfect for reading a book or working on a landscape painting, with the ocean waves providing a soothing soundtrack.
- Thunder Hole - Thunder Hole is a popular ocean-side attraction in Acadia National Park. This impressive granite formation has been shaped by the Atlantic Ocean’s waves and nature since the last Ice Age. A few hours before high tide, you can hear the ocean’s thunderous roar as it crashes into Thunder Hole’s cave. Known as “Thunder Cave” on some old maps, getting too close might get you soaked. If the waves are large enough, you can feel the granite tremble beneath your feet. The granite’s salmon-pink hue is particularly striking at Thunder Hole. On stormy days, park rangers may limit or close access to this site.
- Otter Cliff - Otter Point boasts the highest cliff face on the contiguous United States’ seaboard. Acadia National Park’s loop road offers views of Otter Point from your vehicle, with opportunities to stop and explore. The nearby ringing buoy is a delightful sound to many.
- Otter Creek - Bring quarters for the coin-operated showers at Otter Creek. This quaint island hamlet is on the way to Seal Harbor village. Blackwoods Campground is nearby, and you might see campers heading there. Hikers often prepare to tackle the South Trail of Cadillac Mountain here. Don’t blink, or you might miss it!
- Seal Harbor - Travel along Mount Desert Island’s coastal roads and hear tales of historical figures like John Rockefeller Jr. and Edsel Ford, who spent summers in beautiful Seal Harbor, Maine. Today, celebrities like Martha Stewart visit the Seal Harbor Yacht Club. Enjoy the scenic route with mansions, local homes, wharves, docks, and boats. Take a short break at the Seal Harbor pier for photos and a stretch.
- Asticou Azalea Garden - This Japanese Strolling Garden is a legacy of Beatrix Farrand, the Landscape Architect for John Rockefeller Jr. Visitors can enjoy the garden’s tranquility for a suggested donation. It’s truly an island treasure!
- Somes Sound - Sargent Drive is just minutes from Northeast Harbor village center. The unique blend of sea and mountains creates the only fjord on the Northeast seaboard of the United States. Sargent Drive, part of Acadia National Park, runs along the ocean side at Mount Desert Island’s center. Tall sailboats and lobster boats are common sights, as Somes Sound fjord allows the Atlantic Ocean to extend nearly two-thirds into the island. This route continues around the northwest side of Eagle Lake, leading back to Bar Harbor village.
- Eagle Lake Acadia National Park - The route back to Bar Harbor crosses the Eagle Lake Carriage Road Bridge. Enjoy views of Eagle Lake and the island’s largest known Beaver Lodge!
- Bar Harbor - Acadia National Park surrounds the charming village of Bar Harbor, a quaint New England fishing port and seafood lover’s haven. The lobster here is incredibly fresh and delicious, straight from the icy Atlantic Ocean waters. Bar Harbor is visible from various points during your journey, with the best view from Cadillac Mountain’s summit, a quarter-mile above the village. The tour includes a drive through the village, highlighting historical sites.
