This Buddhist temple, dating back to the late 12th to early 13th century, is situated in the northwest corner of Cambodia’s Banteay Meanchay province, just 20km from the Thai border. It stands as one of the largest temple-city complexes constructed by a Khmer king. Unfortunately, the temple is in poor condition due to the absence of restoration efforts in the 20th century. Its layout is reminiscent of Angkor Thom and other structures linked to Jayavarman VII. The outer gallery features bas-reliefs depicting military battles and scenes of daily life, closely resembling those found in Bayon. Although reaching Banteay Chhmar requires some effort, this should not discourage visitors. The temple attracts few tourists, primarily because of its remote location, offering the rewarding experience of being an intrepid explorer.
